He definitely doesn't strike me as the type. Very strange.

That was my assumption. He took something over there, but it got caught here. Regardless, sucks. He had a bad departure, but I still pull for him. Begrudgingly, sometimes, but I still pull for him.

He was taking a drug that reduces the estrogen that is produced when you take testosterone. There's no other reason to take it unless you have breast cancer.

I thought maybe he was taking Rogaine.

But seriously, the article said he tested positive for the drug Tamoxifen which was is a supplement he was taking. I googled Tamoxifen and it said it was a drug used to treat breast cancer. He did not test for PEDs.

Which is used to reduce estrogen when you take steroids. A player with breast cancer wouldn't be in the NBA. He'd be too sick from the chemo.

The nba officially stated that Calathes took the drug unknowingly and by accident. It was an ingredient in the over the counter product Calathes took and he did not know it was in there.

I just read the NBA's one-paragraph official release, and the words "unknowingly" and "by accident" do not appear.

Tough break. I guess players need to use a pharmacy or doctor who knows NBA drug policies.

Tamoxifen, a widely used breast cancer drug, appears to help treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder. Who knows..

    http://www.medpagetoday.com/Endocrinology/Steroids/44316

"And there were no references to tamoxifen on the bottle, which prevents users from knowing exactly what they're taking, the researchers said. Only tamoxifen's obscure chemical name -- (Z)-1-(p-dimethylaminoethoxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenyl-1-butene -- was included in the label information.

"Often the substances are not listed on the labeling, and products may be marketed as 'natural,' exploiting the belief that they are safer and healthier options," they wrote."

Certainly seems plausible that he didn't know but who knows. However From my googling a it seems this stuff can prolong the benefits from steroids and mitigate problems.

Athletes with million dollar contracts don't take crap without knowing what's in it. Or if they do, they deserve the consequences.
