just back it up 15 yards for a kick. make it equal to a 35 y field goal. it won't be automatic then.

I think you could combine both ideas. Seven points for the TD, and then you could risk a point with either a 50 yard kick or a three yard play.

Adjusting the distance of the kick is one idea to keep it from being automatic.

I say eliminate the kick option altogether.

Extra point attempt from the 2 or 3 yard line after every TD, worth 1 point.

That or maybe they add 2 posts about the width of arena football between and just behind the existing posts just for the extra point.

Do it like rugby. Got to take the kick in line with where the ball is downed when you score. You can back up as far as you want to make the angle easier.

I like this idea but keep the TD at 6 points. If you choose to go for a 1 point kick, it must be snapped from the 25 yard line….thus a 42 yard conversion. If you choose to go for 2 points, it will be snapped from the 2 yard line. That will cause a lot more teams to go for 2 points! They want excitement?….that will generate it!

If we REALLY want excitement, we could make it a steel cage match for the point.

Each team designates one player to go in. One comes out. With a point. :D

Maybe extra points depending on how quickly you take out your opponent. Epic ESPN highlight material.

Let's have each team pick a player from the other team and Rochambeau for the point!

Remember to follow the $. This will not shorten the game, instead it will allow for an extra commercial or 2 after each touchdown.

I think about how this would trickle down to the collegiate level and can't get past our first touchdown in the Miami game.

Allow roughing the kicker so they have to use a real football player to kick.

Even better, the only guys allowed to kick, has to be one of the players on the field during the td play.

This rule change would probably only change college and then later high school rules if/when the percentages of extra points made on average got above a certain level.

According to the information I could find, 99.8% of extra points were converted in the NFL in 2013, while about 50% of 2 point conversions were made.

In college, the percentage is up to 97.1%, which is pretty high, while 2-point conversions are a little over 40%. I could see the NCAA following suit before long.

But the high school extra point percentage is MUCH lower. In fact, the percentage is low enough that some high school leagues and youth leagues give 2 points for a PAT, 1 point for conversion by running play and 2 points for a conversion by passing play. So I have to assume the average PAT at the high school level is at or below 50%. So I don't see that rule changing at the high school level.

That would be fun. A major difference in rugby football though is that the kicker gets to place the ball on the turf after making a small divot with the heel, instead of snapping it from the line of scrimmage. The ball isn't in play till it is kicked and there is no rush to block the kick as the opposing team is mandated to be in the end zone area which is likely at least twenty yards from the ball. So, in rugby there is a good deal less pressure in making points after a score than there is in the NFL where the opposing team gets to rush the ball after the snap. That is not to say it is an easy kick in rugby if placed on the sideline and the result of the game may also be on the line.
It would be interesting to watch the ball snapped on the sideline in the NFL if the TD is in the corner. The kick itself to get a decent angle on the posts would with a quick calculation be 35+ yards minimum.

At the endof this video is a 70 yard kick from a fellow Welshman - not on the sideline but close. (It's actually a penalty kick and not a point after or conversion as it is called in rugby)

They'll have to mud wrestle for extra points since my other suggestion won't work. ;)

I am all for dropping the extra point and replacing it with nothing. Just give six (or 7 or whatever) for the
    TD and that is it.

Replace those extra point with points awarded for all celebrations. Grade each display much like gymnastics and
whichever team has the highest score (just like gymnastics) gets 1 point added to each of its touchdowns. Further,
add another 15 seconds or so to play clock to allow for more celebration time. Of course, those ridiculous penalties for
taunting, taking your helmet off, etc must be eliminated. These actions should be rewarded rather than penalized.
