Just bought a new computer with Windows 8 and a new printer. So far I'm lost.

In order to install the printer, the instructions are to "Browse My Computer and double-click the HP Smart Install CD drive."

Can someone tell me how to find My Computer in Windows 8 in order to browse it? If it doesn't exist, I'm just going to take back the damn printer.

I stumbled across Control Panel but still didn't find a way to browse. I had to use the option of using a CD that came with the printer to install. The printer now works. A victory in figuring out this new system. I'm tired and am going to back to my good old Windows XP for the rest of the day.

Windows+E is a shortcut to get to Windows Explorer, then you should be able to browse like you use to.

Thanks. I'm going somewhere tomorrow and buy a copy of Windows 8 for Dummies. It's the only way I'll get the hang of this mess.

After updating all your apps, run windows update. You will probably have 100 + updates to do. After installing all the updates check the app store tile, there should be a free update for Windows 8.1. Install it and it is alot better than standard windows 8. You can leave up your desktop and it will install a start button!

I'm not sure what you mean. Are there apps on the new computer (Windows 8) that need to be updated?

If you update to windows 8.1 you shouldn't have to worry about updating the tiles too

Thanks. I'm waiting for my copy of Dummies before I try much at all with Windows 8. I'm just letting the new computer sit there and look nice. (It looks like the first things I will want to do is update to Windows 8.1, download Word 2013, and start trying to transfer some files.)

The icon on your taskbar (bottom bar) that looks like a manila folder with green, red, and blue tabs on it is basically My Computer aka File Explorer aka Explorer.

Also, you can install a start menu if you like with Classic Shell

I now have my copy of Windows 8 for Dummies, and will sit down with it at the computer and find out just how dumb I really am. (Looking ahead to more confusion, I've already ordered my copy of Windows 8.1 for Dummies.)

Until I (sort of, start to) get the hang of Windows 8, wouldn't I just be asking for more trouble by updating to Windows 8.1?

coco, you can look into "Classic Shell" http://www.classicshell.net/ and get the Windows 7 look back if you enjoy that better. Windows 8 does actually have a good amount of features and its slightly faster than 7.

I never had Windows 7. I've been perfectly happy with Windows XP. But all good things must end, and things must be fixed even when they're not broken.

I suggest that you go ahead with 8.1 just to get the new features and enhancements. There is nothing earth shattering and they did smooth a FEW corners in the victim interface. There is a Start button on the screen but it is far from the old Start menu of the days gone past; it just brings up the Start Screen.

I find myself using the Windows key on the keyboard far more now than I did in the previous versions. I do find the search on the Start Screen pretty decent - just start typing the name of something you want to do or find and the system does a reasonable job of listing the options.

    I'll upgrade in the morning.

One thing I've noticed is that websites load amazingly faster with Windows 8 than with Windows XP. But I imagine that's actually due to the new computer and not to the operating system. Also the new computer uses McAfee, the old one uses Norton, if that makes any difference in speed.
