In spite of that performance, we finshed 8th in total defese

For that game, Morrison, Taylor, Kitchens, Rolin, Anzalone and Powell were all injured.

Total defense is misleading, we also defended fewer plays.

Look at per play numbers and tell us how the defense compared.

Edit: Fine, I'll look up the numbers. According to the NCAA we were 42nd in the country in yards given up per play. Touchdowns given up per play we were 31st.

Is there a metric for best defense per play? Not just per catch, per rush etc, etc..

For all the chatter, for all the reasoning, back and forth and speculation... for all that, only one thing matters to my mind:

3 years. 0 SEC titles, 0 SEC title game appearances, 0 NCs, 1 bowl win.

    22-16, (13-11 SEC),

I like Muschamp as a guy, but there's no way that couldn't be described as anything other than under-achieving at the University of Florida.

Sure, there's a bunch of reasons, extenuating circumstances, heck... even excuses. But that's under-achieving, which is why this year needs to be a good one. He gets a clean slate from me in the meantime...

    All true.

Also true he is one year removed from being SEC coach of the year, and having his team a play or two away fom the BCS title game... after beating four top ten teams in one season.

It's a mixed bag. He inherited a "broken program", with a weak roster on offense and had a tough transition year, after clearing out several potheads and overly entitled malcontents. In 2012, he over achieved by a good bit. In 2013, he under achieved by a good bit. Throughout he has failed to make the offensive coaching hires he has needed.

Hopefully, he has that last part corrected and gets some reasonable luck wrt injures.

Okay. So, the per pay metrics show us as a top 30ish to top 40ish type defense. In context of the starters we lost from 2012 (Floyd, Hunter, McCray, Bostic, JJ, Elam and Evans), that is probably to be expected for a strong defensive coach like Muschmp. Most teams go in the crapper with that many losses on defense. Of course, prior to losing our best player (Easley), and eventually six LBs, we were a dominant defense, even after losing seven starters fom 2012.

We return more experience this year, and will have reason to have hope their offense might actually score. Both factors are significant.

    Absolutely. :)

I wasn't going to dilvulge on that last part because that's the bit that tends to cause the disagreement amongst the various stakeholders. I agree with your analysis of Year 1 and the fact that any transition comes with its lumps and I acknowledge that this year's injuries have been calamitous (Easley most significantly). He did also have that great year in the middle, bowl game not withstanding. This is why I am open minded about Year 4.

What doesn't change is that IMO, for whatever reason, he has under-achieved as a whole so far.

Okay, I see. Unless he goes 14-0 every year he's not worth a sh*t.

I find it comical the same people who praised the Muschamp hire at UF say Jimbo can't coach. They are essentially THE SAME coach, with one being Defense and the other being Offense. They both followed very, very similar career paths (except Muschamp followed Saban to the NFL).

I don't care where Jimbo won (ACC or not....but I think he won at LSU too, which isn't in the ACC). I'd take his national championship and 3-1 record vs. my team any day over 4-8......

Yeah, Jimbo can't coach..... (or recruit, or hire a competent replacement/assistant coaches, or develop 1st round QBs, etc)..... (rollseyes)

Never said he can't coach. I just find your adoration of him a bit excessive. He did go 14 - 0 this year but against a pretty weak schedule. Things would have been okay if you had cited this year - especially if you're going to compare him to Muschamp.

This thread is about Muschamp and you referenced a 12 - 2 record to sing dumbos praises when that record includes a loss where Muschamp defeated him soundly in dumbo's home stadium. My eyes are rolling so violently I'm getting queasy...

Ive said this too and a lot of people ignore the issue. Add in the fact that rolin anzalone and powell are out for spring, uf has only 5 scholly lbs right now and of those, only 4 have seen real playing time.

All eight are expected to be available for start of season however. We are thin here I agree.
