SEC defensive player of the year. He's better than where he got drafted.

His measurables for the position are not ideal, but I'm sure his unique situation played a part in him being drafted lower than what he thought he should have gone.

His poor measurables killed him. 4.9 40, 25 inch vert. Just not athletic enough. Antonio coleman lead the sec in sacks a few years ago and went undrafted bc he was a tweener like Sam. Didn't see anyone making a big deal of it.

He's better than where he got drafted, no question; but most mocks had him between rounds 4 and 7 before and after his announcement.

I don't think there's any doubt that the revelation may have scared off a few teams who would have taken a chance on him earlier had he not disclosed his situation, though.

His combine was just awful, but the good news is, you are on a team and one that had a really good draft class. Make the team, help them win and your next contract is about how good you are. The Draft is about how good they think you might be.

He will be lucky to make the team. This is like American Idol in the first round. It is great he got drafted but as others have said a 4.9 40 and 25 vertical is not going to get it done. He isn't going to be able to speed rush NFL OT's and I don't think he can bull rush them either so ..... he will be lucky to make the team. He isn't going to be an OLB either because he can't cover. FSU DE/OLB Christian Jones is having the same problem. Tweener. Not big enough for DE, not fast/agile enough for OLB. I'm glad Sam got drafted but he needs to realize it doesn't matter what round he went in or if he was a free agent. Who cares? He has to find a spot on the team and it will be along shot for him. It has nothing to do with his sexuality either. With his measurables, he only got drafted b/c of his sexuality, to mak a fee good story and of course the cameras where there to see the "history" and tears. I don't care about any of that. He has work to do if he is going to make an NFL roster.

Kelcy Quarles, another very good DT in the SEC this year (first team?), wasn't even drafted. Cry me a river. ESPN is now way too political for me. Politics affects everything in this country.

By that logic Jackson Jeffcoat should be pissed, but since he's straight nobody cares.

Sam needs to just shut his mouth and play his ass off and *earn* a spot on the team. Enough with the "I'm gay, hear me roar" script. Nut up or shut up, Sam.

A 4.9 40 is not unusual for a DE; and he actually ran a 4.79 at a previous workout.

A lot of equally slow or slower DE's got picked before Sam, including his teammate, Ealy.

Only 8 DE's in the whole draft ran better than 4.8; while a dozen ran 4.8 or worse.

He was the best player on the field when we played them this year, I'm guessing Tyler Murphy and which ever of our offensive lineman that was trying to block him think he should have been drafted higher.

His vertical was worse than purifoys bench press. I can't understand how he even had one sack much less 11.

While there are a lot of anti-gay attitudes, especially in pro sports, I think some teams/GM's/coaches may have just not wanted the distraction, but aren't necessarily anti-gay.

In other words, given the choice of 2 DE's of equal ability and potential, they'd pick the 1 who fits in more easily with less maintenance... there are still plenty of players in locker rooms who won't accept him.

I have no knowledge of history on DPOY's in SEC draft history. Who voted on that honor? I have to admit... if my son won that award, and did not get drafted any earlier than he did, I'd have questions! LOL!!

He should have been drafted last and been irrelevant.

Well he's gay, so obviously there is a conspiracy against him.

    Obviously.
