Gators aren't exactly tearing it up, sitting fifth about 2/3 of the way through round one.
Three rounds, top 5 advance.
Slow start, primarily due to the struggles of Horsfield, who is UF's best golfer. Sit in 5th place at -1, Illinois leads at -7.
Way too early to worry, but UF is right around the cut line
Now in a 3 way tie for 2nd at -2. Illini lead at -5
Horsfield was +5 after 4 holes, nice recovery by being 3 under rest of round so far. But his score is still the one being dropped.
Most of the guys are about halfway thru the back 9
Went south in a big hurry, Tosti has bogeyed 15, 16, 17...Zhang goes bogey and double to finish, Orr also bogey 18
Uf in 8th place at +4, new Mexico leads at 3 under
In the clubhouse at +4, currently 8th place but likely a couple of teams come back to them.
Unlv done at -1 and Illinois even
Poor round but at least not too may strokes to make up
Really, no excuse not to advance given this regional field.
Just have to play and score as they are capable of doing.
Auburn in at 4 over, south carolina 2 over....other teams not butchering closing holes as bad as uf did
Individually, several players went low to help their team's aggregate ...-5, -4 etc.
one player was -6 on the front, and got to -7 before sliding back...(like Tosti did for UF).
That was what was missing for UF in round 1.
Best for UF was even. Need a couple of gators to "go low" in the next 2 rounds.
Actually if you look at the scorecards, pretty much everyone has been eaten up by 16-18. Especially 17 - South Carolina carded 3 bogies, a double and triple, and Illinois carded 4 bogies and a quad...pretty brutal, and those are teams ahead of us.
I guess some teams are finishing on the easier front nine though.
St Mary's took a tumble as they closed their round leaving UF on the cut line, tied for 5th with Purdue and Auburn at +4.
5 shots off the pace.
Yeah, I realized in general that the teams not falling were teams that finished on the front nine...other than st Mary's lol. 17 and 18 were killers
St Mary plays 17 holes at even par, one off the lead. Play the 9th at 6 over and drop like a stone
A few holes into day two and they are now three shots outside of a qualifying spot.
Still not time to panic, but they really need to start figuring things out or at best tomorrow will be a nail biter.
Looks like scoring conditions are better, UF not taking advantage just yet. Need to make up some ground here before they hit 8 and 9
And just like that UF from 8th to 4th with 5 birdies, 3 under for the day
Don't think I have a regional this tightly bunched. Gators are tied for third, but drop a shot and they'd be sixth, outside the cut line. And only 4 shots out of first.
Been like that all day...it's crazy.Halfway thru this round I would say there are still 9 teams in reasonable contention to advance.
UF played well on the front....now sit tied for 2nd, -6 for the day and -2 for the tourney. But only a few hiccups from being in trouble. Not comfortable just yet.
Much like the women, UF has a solid team effort going. UF's worst score today is E. Most teams have an anchor with a horrible score. While you get to drop the worst score, that eliminates the margin for error on your other 4. UF can better survive a rough day from one of their top guys.
Horsfield heating up...4 under for the day and gets UF to 3 under as a team. Sole 2nd place
Seven under on the day is pretty good
Tosti with an eagle to get his back side started.
Still need to weather those closing holes.
Tosti gives back the eagle with a double bogey! Ouch!
Sam has climbed 26 spots on the leaderboard, Orr has climbed 17
