Me doesn't think Rand Paul is angling his message to attract the Rows, Rivers, Freds, Olds and 108s of the country. Just a hunch.

I'm pretty sure those who don't consider Booth a hero is not limited to just a few of us.

That's all true. But we live in the United States, where a Conferate flag has a direct connection to events in our past, and where white supremacists use it as a symbol of white supremacy. The Union Jack doesnt really mean jack (excuse the pun) to me, but it probably means a lot more to someone else, especially if you were to wrap yourself up in it in the Republic of Ireland.

Of course we all have the right to display the symbols we want to identify ourselves with. even white supremacists. I would never argue otherwise. What you seem to want is that other people view them in the same manner as yourself, and for there to be no consequences for actions or behavior. That is unreasonable in a free society.

What I want is for people to be reasonable, and to not stereotype without at least thinking it through first.

That is an unreasonable request, just as would the tatoo and pierced guy in the story with your dad wanting not to be judged based on his appearance in a job interview. Maybe the tatted-up guy is a great worker if he only got a chance, maybe the guy with the Confederate flag T-shirt is a nice, progressive person if you get to know him. But if you're a stranger, someone else making snap judgements about you based on your appearance or dress is unavoidable.

Huh? Have I argued that everyone that waves a confederate flag is racist on this thread? But as you can see with the article there, not everyone thought the black guy with the flag was "honoring black Confederates" as he said he was. In otherwords, people had no idea what his acual intent was and made judgments. Even when explained, they seemed to think it was a bad idea. Which is exactly what I've been saying happens when you choose to adopt a symbol other people find offensive.

The point is, those people are ignorant. Why are you apologizing for stupid people?

Uh, isnt calling those people "ignorant" and "stupid" without knowing or talking to them also a snap judgment?

This... It's more like a rumor than fact at this point. Or is this a chain E-mail letter?

No, its not my fault people bs'd their way through school and can't open a book to think for themselves. If more people would open a book instead of watching corrupt news organizations for their information, maybe we wouldn't have these problems to the extent we have them.

When I first saw this title, I expected something Jessie Jackson said. Or Alec Baldwin. Or Senator Byrd. Or Al Sharpton.

Yeah, I know, if only people acted and thought just like you do, everything would be ok. I often think the same thing myself. But I know this is an unreasonable request, so the dude abides.

I didn't say they had to think like me, that is quite unreasonable.

Why not just start by you know, paying attention in school?

Well, I majored in history with an emphasis on Southern US history in grad school (MA). And here I am totally rejecting what you are saying. So I wonder what you mean by "paying attention in school." Seems like it means "think like me" from where I'm standing. Again, that's just my impression. But maybe I payed too much attention in school.

If you majored in history you should know better.

This is what people say when they have failed to (or cannot) present a persuasive argument.

I wonder what Native Americans think of the US flag. Do you care?
