Yes, but he could miss games, of course he could also be a monster in two weeks!

Adam Lane is in my ears and in my eyes. There beneath the blue (and orange) suburban skies.

Define 'back-up' in this context, though.

Jones has flashed some brilliance as a freshman. We have two equally highly rated freshmen on the way in, one of whom was the highest rated RB in the nation as a recruit! The other is a senior who has improved substantially too.

We'd all love Jones in there (get well soon, Matt!) but Brown, Taylor and Lane aren't conventional 'back-ups' in the ordinary sense. If we can't win without Jones, we've got bigger problems at RB than I had hoped!

Issue is not the running aspect: its the knowing the offense aspect. The RBs have to know when to run, who to run behind, when to block and who to block. The offense is complicated, the newbies will need time to know the intricacies of the offense. So far only Brown and Jones are familiar with the playbook.

    Understood, of course.

However Jones was a freshman last year and wasn't an early enrollee, yet he still contributed in his first season as '3rd man in'. Thats effectively Lane's position. If so, Taylor as an EE and as 2nd on the chart shouldn't be substantially behind and should actually be ahead of where Jones was at the same point - he was only 6 months later onto campus, after all.

Brown has been a Gator for many years. He should know the offence by now. In that respect he shouldn't be considered a back up at all.

EDIT: For the record, I'm not stating we should expect to see something like having Emmitt out of the backfield but by the same token, if we can't win with a 5 star RB early enrollee being 2nd off the sideline (you gameplan accordingly, of course) behind a solid OL, then we are in trouble. Less highly touted freshmen have come in and performed for other schools so I see no reason not to feel at least a little optimism! If Todd Gurley can do it...

FWIW I had a dream last night that we were backed up around the 10 yard line to start the game, Taylor got the opening handoff made a man miss about 10 yards past the line and took it to the house

I think the biggest issue isn't loss of running talent- heck, Mack's probably as good if not better than Jones in that area- its pass blocking and going out of the backfield, when people wonder why Gilly didn't get the ball a ton until his Sr. year, that's the answer why (look at last year, as a true frosh Jones was a better pass blocker than Gilly as a Sr.) and its where we could struggle early on until we get Matt back.

Matt has more talent than Mack at running the ball too but you are right about the pass protection. Matt is the only one I trust back there. Going back and watching tape I really felt bad for Jeff seeing that he had to rely on two players who were terrible at pass blocking in Gillie and Reed.

True but unless we're going to use him as a primary back or use a two back attack as our base set, having him in there would essentially reveal the play as a pass ahead of time.

I would hope that if Georgia put 2 of them out there last year then we could atleast have one freshmen learn the playboook!!!! Atleast I hope and pray so!!!! miami swears there gonna get us because our starting Rb hasn't even practice yet but I have to remind them that Matt jones has yet to start a game. We will be fine!

Man down, man up! Though we might not have the "experience" of a starter, we are talking Toledo here...this gives our backs the ability to help iron out some wrinkles and be prepared for Miami. Looking at the clips of RB's on GatorZone against "Our Defense" I don't think we will have a problem running the ball. Now pass protection could be an issue.
