Lane hasn't even practiced yet. No decision will be made about him redshirting until after the season has started, but that's my guess. Mack Brown is the primary backup until Taylor learns his blocking assignments. They're almost neck-and-neck as runners, both better inside guys than Jones. Brown is the fastest RB we have, but still waiting to bust a long one.

Not really worried about this. Ask me again in six weeks.

Why does Jones have the clear #1 spot then? If the other 2 are better inside guys and are faster then you're statement makes no sense. Jones is the best blocker but how do you know the other facts when none have little playing time much start.

    Just curious

I think Taylor & Lane are the most promising RB duo since John L. Williams and Neal Anderson arrived together. That includes Fred & Eli. I'm excited about both and think they will complement each other.

Matt has lost 14 pounds and is feeling weak. My estimation is he will need 8-10 weeks to be back to where he was.

    Thanks for the insight.

Has the illness been dealt with? Is he now recovering or is he still at risk?

Once he's in recovery his weight numbers will bounce back fairly rapidly -- especially in Dillman's system. Matt's conditioning will take a little bit longer to respond.

Viral meningitis (if that's what it actually is) usually only lasts about a week. You can lose a lot of weight in that week, but there is no way it would take 8-10 weeks to gain it back. 3 weeks max, and that includes the sick time.

Obviously not as bad as bacterial meningitis, but no joke whatsoever.

Stinks for both Jones and Driskel to lose practice time and conditioning leading into the season. Jones was doing fantastic by all accounts, this is a big set back IMHO.

Silver lining is that maybe we get that next man up mentality that wasn't always there since SOS left. Feels like the teams of latter Meyer suffered a touch from this star mentality that there was first string and then it was some cliff of talent. Especially with the qb position, seems like the backups were not mentally prepared to play at all. The Post Tebow concussion game at LSU spoke volumes that there was zero confidence in the backup. What shocked me even more was the backup at the time was supposed to be a great passer and LSU's secondary at that time was giving up huge passing numbers. Zero confidence. Maybe it was the prelude to the talent gap, but that always bothered me. Hopefully these current events will show that even if your second string, you better be ready to seize your opportunity and should expect to get that opportunity in this league. Hope they use this practice time to get comfortable.

Maybe I'm just stuck in the past, but with SOS I always felt like there was never a for sure 1st string, if you were having a bad day the next man could step in and you never knew if that could be more permanent ala Danny W. or a cornerback or whomever. Boom seems to be cut from similar cloth, time will tell.
