You may not remember Martha Ray. She had a very throaty voice and was a raucous comedian in the 1940-1950s. For sure, all of us over 70 yrs. do remember. She was one of a kind, but another example of what has made our country a good one.

It was well recognized that Martha Raye endured less comfort, and more danger than any other Vietnam entertainer.

The most unforgivable oversight of TV is that her shows were not taped.
I was unaware of her credentials or where she is buried.

Somehow I just can't see Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, or Jessica Simpson doing what this woman (and the other USO women, including Ann Margaret & Joey Heatherton) did for our troops in past wars.

Most of the old time entertainers were made of a lot sterner stuff than today's crop of activists bland whiners.

The following is from an Army Aviator who takes a trip down memory lane:
"It was just before Thanksgiving '67 and we were ferrying dead and wounded from a large GRF west of Pleiku. We had run out of body bags by noon, so the Hook (CH-47 CHINOOK) was pretty rough in the back.

All of a sudden, we heard a 'take-charge' woman's voice in the rear.
There was the singer and actress, Martha Raye, with a Special Forces beret and jungle fatigues, with subdued markings, helping the wounded into the Chinook, and carrying the dead aboard.
'Maggie' had been visiting her SF 'heroes' out 'west'.
We took off, short of fuel, and headed to the USAF hospital pad at Pleiku.
As we all started unloading our sad pax's, a 'Smart Mouth' USAF Captain said to Martha.... "Ms Ray, with all these dead and wounded to process, there would not be time for your show!"

To all of our surprise, she pulled on her right collar and said "Captain, see this eagle? I am a full 'Bird' in the US Army Reserve, and this is a 'Caduceus' which means I am a Nurse, with a surgical specialty....now, take me to your wounded!"
He said, "Yes ma'am... follow me."

Several times at the Army Field Hospital in Pleiku, she would 'cover' a surgical shift, giving a nurse a well-deserved break.

Martha is the only woman buried in the Special Forces cemetery at Ft Bragg.

Yep, no female entertainer of today would even come close to filling those shoes.

This could have just be a sub-thread on my "Fresh Takes" series. Yes, older folks are made of sterner stuff and have more grit than today's whinny pop stars. :)

First of all thanks for the great post.

You owned me when you listed Joey Herrington. Shawang!!!!

I agreed with the opinions and enjoyed the all of the facts.

Just one note. Not all if the entertainers of today are selfish and self centered. There are a lot if them that spend a lot of their own money and time on our GI's. Most of these activities are out of sight and range of video and audio gear.

Gary Sinise and his Lieutenant Dan band toured Many domestic and overseas based. Several country western stars spent time doing the same thing. Denzel Washington open his check book to help rehab severally wounded GI's. To bad many of them are too busy twerking, staging photo opts, getting arrested, and going into drug rehab instead of supporting our GI's.

Thanks for being a skeptic and for providing the links.
Don't feel bad about being skeptical because I would of never read these two great articales.

I loved this one the most from the second link.
I just cannot see Rosann or Ba Ba Streisand doing anything like that.

    Denzel rocks. Found this:

Meryl Streep and Denzel were on the today show "live" with Katie Couric to talk about the movie "Manchurian Candidate." At one point Katie asked Denzel, "have you seen Fahrenheit 9/11?" To which Denzel replied, "No, and I have no intentions on seeing
it." Katie and Meryl were "so noticeably" taken aback! It was so cool! :)

Then, a discourse (or more preferably, a fight!) began between all three of them with Denzel being barraged with all kinds of anti-Bush, anti-Republican comments, but "the man stood his ground" and soon enraged the women so much that they couldn't get a word in edgewise. Meryl Streep turned blood red and she sat with her legs crossed and her one leg shaking up and down, fuming! Then Katie uttered the words that put the final nail in her coffin, she said to Denzel "you see, that's the problem I have with 'you people'." She of course did not get to finish her sentence because Denzel pounced on her verbally by responding "YOU PEOPLE! YOU PEOPLE! Just what do you mean you people! Do you mean 'You People' as in me as a Christian, or do you mean '"You People'" as in me as a REPUBLICAN?" She then tap danced her way through the next minute of the show. But Denzel went out fighting and declaring that Fahrenheit 9/11 is nothing but propaganda and lies distorted to support a Democratic cynical film directors views.
