    ...per Mark Long on Twitter.

I had high hopes for him. Wasn't he breaking off some great plays last week. Anyone have any insight?

I think it's a temporary move since a few guys are banged up. He played safety in high school.

Probably a good idea. Better to get him experience now versus later if we actually need him to play/start on defense during the season.

I think he's still mostly going to be used as a receiver. Maybe he'll play both sides of the ball though.

Usually not a good sign. I thought we were hearing some grumblings that he was making plays on offense before his injury last fall. Then Mike Peterson called him a natural this spring.

Oh well, maybe he'll be an All-America over there. Clearly, it is good news overall if our coaches feel it is OK to move a receiver over to defense.

With Debose adding to the number of wide receivers this spring, the coaching staff has moved redshirt freshman Marqui Hawkins from wide receiver to safety, where he will line up in today's scrimmage.

There is little depth at safety, where potential starter Keanu Neal remains out with a hamstring injury.

“"Well, I think as much as anything, numbers,” Muschamp said of the move. “He played safety in high school. I thought he was a physical player in high school and did some nice things. We'll see how he does.

“It's hard with us, we're so far along defensively. To make that move mid-stream is tough on him, so we've been out getting him lined up and those sort of things and just see how instinctively he plays the game. He wasn't making a whole lot of movement at receiver and we felt like it was the best move for him and us."

Hawkins was a very good safety in high school. Gave DRob fits when they went against each other. He's instinctive at the position and a vicious hitter. I don't see this as bad news. He's essentially replacing Showers who moved from safety to RB/slot receiver.

Good move for the team. We're really low on numbers at safety.

Well.... with a name like Marqui Hawkins....
He's definitely got THE right name for a safety!

Nothing wrong with a 6'1" 215# safety who likes to hit. Hawkins was a very good HS safety and had his share of big hits. I'm still waiting on the next Major Wright to appear in O&B.

This is a good move as he was apparantly falling behind the other WRs. UF was one of the few schools that recruited him as a WR, so back to S should be an easy transition.

Peterson would know about switching positions. He was a QB and safety in high school.

Switching from high school to college is one thing. That happens ALL the time.
Still, I will hold out hope. We certainly have a number of players who have switched positions and been quite successful through out the years. Maybe Hawkins will be one of them.

Darn, too bad. I wish it were being said we are just so loaded at WR it's the only way for him to see the field. In that case would be great news.

IMHO, we could use some size at safety. Our starters the last few years have been smaller than our corners. Hawkins is a load and could turn out to be very effective in run support. Like I said before, safety isn't new to him. He spent his entire high school career playing both WR and safety. A number of big programs recruited him specifically for defense.

FWIW, Gorman has been struggling a bit this spring and he is a bit undersized.

Harris, Maye and Neal all have good size. It's been an issue in the past but shouldn't be as much this year.

I believe that Mike Peterson started as a Safety at UF and moved to LB. That is defense to defense, but its still a move when already at UF.

As I stated in the quote you are replying to. We definitely have had some success stories on position switches.
Eugene McCaslin from RB to LB. Tony Rowel from DL to OL. Valdez Showers from DB to RB/WR. Kevin Freeman from RB to LB.
It certainly happens and should happen if someone is not producing at particular position. As I stated, I am holding out hope.
