I'm curious, is there anything specific you know about this situation that leads you to believe that Marcus would take the high road or that he wasn't exaggerating the verbal attack in hopes of justifying his interaction with fan? It just seems odd that a fan of Texas Tech would use a racial slur given the make-up of their own roster and coaching staff. That this guy has been doing his thing for such a long time makes it seem even more unlikely that he would be a racist. I'm not saying it's not possible, but I guess I would want to know with absolute certainty that someone used a racial slur before I played the race card. Until then, it should just be sufficient that he acknowledged that he crossed the line with whatever he said (which could be any number of non-racist comments).

When I was young and knew everything, I offended one player to the point of him throwing a cup of water at me. Anything can set someone off to respond inappropriately (re: specific words). I wasn't saying anything specifically bad, but I was being loud and trying to make it harder for them to communicate in their huddle (TampaJack would not have approved for sure). But I would have been offended if the player had tried to justify his actions by claiming that I said something racist. As it were, I thought the reaction was hilarious, and their coach got upset with him...it also encouraged folks in the surrounding areas to make it harder for them to talk at their bench. It wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, I never thought he should have been suspended, and most teams take their huddles out onto the court these days anyway. I earned my cup of water, and I can't say that that old dude didn't earn his shove. I'm just cautious about calling the man out as being a racist.

It wasn't more than 3 games, he was back in the boxscore for the Kentucky game.

    From Texas Tech website:

In case anybody is wondering, they have 3 home games left.

I hear "piece of crap" too but can't make out anything else. I'm shocked that a player like Smart would react to just "piece of crap" but it sounds like that may be all that happened.

    WRONG.

Smart should be kicked off the team. The players need to act like the fans aren't even there. Put them on ignore.

If the fan had physically touched Smart, the fan should have been ejected, but anything short of that the fan has done nothing illegal. NO word, not even "that" one, is illegal.

BTW something that no one has brought up... what if he had done it to a ref? He would most assuredly have been gone for the season. Why should he get off lighter by doing it to a fan?

    Nope.,..nothing specific.

But various sources, as per espn, have reported that Smart originally said he responded to a racial slur.

Smart's reaction compels me to believe he either heard.... Or thought he heard.... a racial slur. I guess I can't wrap my head around why he would choose this moment and this scenario to respond to what would otherwise be one of thousands upon thousand of jeers he had previously ignored.

Fwiw, I never called the man out as being a racist. I would have zero insight to make such a characterization.

The biggest difference between the thousands, upon thousands of jeers from other fans, is this fan was less than a foot away, and taunting him right as the game was pretty much put out of reach. The combination of proximity and emotions may have put him over the edge. Who knows?

All I know is I saw what Smart did, and I don't know what the fan said beyond he and Smart's "he said-she said". Until I get conformation that he called him "n*****", Smart is the bad guy in all of this. And in all honesty, even if the fan did drop the racial slur, Smart is still very much wrong to be physically violent, and still shouldn't be given a pass.

True, it's not illegal. It IS, however, against the rules. So fat ass needs to be suspended too.

I am not giving him a pass, other than saying that I understand his reaction - - - though do not condone it.

Even ESPN is backing off the fan some what on the racial slurs. Meaning the evidence is overwhelming that Smart played the race card as an excuse, and I hope someone knocks his a&& out for it. Using the race card on someone who didn't actually say anything racist is absolutely pathetic. If the man DID call him the N word, he deserved to get punched. But EVERYONE including cheerleaders, camerman, reports, and people around him including black fans(who are very near him) didn't hear an N word. So Smart...if it's the case...I have no respect for you as a person or a man.

It is loud - - - and thus possible that he misheard. Or, he entirely made it up to validate his actions.
If the latter, that would be more egregious than the shove.

Smart has tried to start a fight multiple times on the court this year, has destroyed a chair, may be leading the country in technicals....not out of character at all it seems.

Agree that falsely pulling the race card like that is low.

But even if the guy made some kind of racist comment, it doesn't give Smart the right to get physical. Smart has to grow up and be a man. Sometimes that means checking his temper, and getting somebody in authority to deal with idiots. He could have his coach call security and I'm sure they'd escort a guy out for pulling that stuff.

I'm not saying what Smart did was justifiable but I do believe it is possible he heard what he thought was a racial slur. He really needs to get himself under control though. Kid has a bright future if he doesn't allow himself to screw it up.

Agree to a point on the second issue. But calling a black person the N word to their face...I feel no sympathy if you get knocked out lol. Still, Smart should be cool because I guarantee he will hear remarks from every fan base he plays against now.

Can't say that I feel any sympathy for anybody acting like a racist idiot and paying a price for it.

But Smart definitely needs to be smarter... as you say, fans will be on him now, for sure.
