    btw...I hate those apartments right on the corner of University and 13th. They seem so out of scale and out of place compared to everything else.

    Yon Hall no longer exists. I lived there for a while. Trader Tom’s, I believe, was the topless bar on SW 13th street. I was friendly with a girl who danced there for a while. I would take her to Dub’s for its wet tee shirt contest. $100 or so for winning it. My wife worked at Pic N’ Save for a while. The $2.15 an hour came in handy. Skinny dipping went on at the quarry off of Hawthorne Road. Basketball pick up games at Norman Hall and the back part of Alligator Alley. Hasn’t Leonardo’s by the slice now closed down? Anyone remember Mrs. Bates’ apartments behind the College Inn? The walls and floors were so thin that the guy taking a bath downstairs seemed to be in our living room.

    Somebody mentioned YT Parker's BBQ. This is where my roommates went to sober up. If you could eat all of his triple x sandwich you got it for free. None of my clan could do it. During my run at Florida, he got closed twice for selling dog ( well that was the rumor). I had one roommate who use to play Grits ain't Groceries by Major Lance. when he ate his sandwich there.

    Ate at Art's and the Brown Derby a lot but no this went into an old Denny's or Jerry's South of Archer but north of both of those places- it also had a 2lb steak called the Cowboy and a 1lb steak called the cowgirl

    I think it was called Cattleman's

    I don't remember Cattleman's, but we didn't live in Gainesville between 1970 and 2000. A steakhouse called General Gaines opened in the 60's and was around for some years after we left town. It was a nice restaurant in the early years, next to / connected to the former Holiday Inn on SW 13th in the area you mentioned. It closed before the motel was sold, changed its name and slid into disrepute, attracting drug dealers and demimondes.

    Is that the same Cattleman's that was/is on Old Winter Garden Road between Kirkman and Hiawassee? Back when I used to put the hurts on those 2 lb. porterhouses--The Cowboy. I never took a stab at the 6 pound challenge though.

    The General Gaines was as Lacuna said pretty good for a few years, one summer while I was in school I worked for a Frat brother who owned a franchise Steam Master I think it was cleaning carpets at apartment complexes and restaurants the General Gaines was the hardest to clean and took hours and hours to get the grease out of the carpet around the kitchen. Those nights I earned my pay. College Arms was no walk in the park either what a bunch of slobs :)

    Cleaning carpets in a college town must be a blast! LOL. I know the carpet in our first apartment off Tower Road was crazy filthy with four college students tearing up that crappy orange shag carpet. Between spilt beers, bongwater, seeds, vomit, whatever was grilled, and all other sorts of debaucherous substances, I would think it would just be more cost effective to replace the carpets upon the turnover of the lease :p. I remember when my parents came down to visit, she took one look in the window and turned to my dad and said "Jim, we're getting a room!". Good times.

    The whole summer was a trip, we worked mostly at nightafter restaurants were closed and in the afternoons at apartment complexes, it was when steam cleaning was kind of new as a service and we got into a number of funky places that had not been cleaned regularly or sometimes at all, The first time we did Gen Gaines it was an all night job mostly spent on a 20sq foot area just off the kitchen, I never ate there again. It was Arts or Larry's for steaks in my book.

    @gatorknights
    exeptional is a tough standard and BBQ is about as personal a taste as you can get, we have enjoyed The Woodyard Grill in Newberry, the place is run by the same fellow, Rocky, who started and ran the Newberry Backyard BBQ for several years, sold it and the new folks ran it out of business. My wife enjoys the chicken, she is pretty picky and sends back chicken that is not moist when it arrives~ never had to send any back at WG, I like the babybacks and beans and slaw (free refills) and always start with Onion rings (very good, actually too good :)

    not that I know of, I think David's has a shop in Tioga, used to have one on NW 39 ave, some folks love it but once he moved out of the original nw 6th and 23rd ave spot where he started I think he went from quality to quanity, Sonny's has turned into the McDonalds of BBQ, the original Waldo Road store is the best of the bunch in town
