A Massachusetts family says they have received a letter from an anonymous scrooge blasting their Christmas decorations because “not everybody in the neighborhood is Christian."

The letter addressed to the Hunter family of Newton, Mass., which was postmarked in Boston and signed “your neighbors,” also called the decorations “cheap, tacky and kitschy.” Whoever wrote the letter urged the family to take their celebration indoors, Fox 25 reports.

Kristen Hunter, who said her family has decorated her home each Christmas for the past 37 years, won’t let the letter ruin her holiday cheer.

“It’s Christmas. You can’t take Christ out of Christmas,” she told Fox 25.

The Hunter's decorations include Santa and baby Jesus in a nativity scene.

According to the station, the letter also asked how the Hunter family would feel if they had to drive by an anti-Christian display.

“If that’s what they want to do that’s fine. People have the right to celebrate,” Hunter said.

Hunter’s neighbors gathered around her home on Saturday night to sing Christmas carols and show their support, according to WHDH

It's private property....give me a break! Now people have to be worried about putting up Christmas decorations?

How about we just ban all religions? The lack of religion - heck any religion - in people's lives are contributing to the decline in society. I don't care what you believe in...believe in SOMETHING, live a good life, and move on.

If a Jewish family put up Hanukkah decorations and people ordered them to take the decorations down, there would be all kinds of uproar. There's a family down the street that decorates for Kwanzaa - you can bet there'd be major uproar if they were sent something telling them to take their decorations down.

I can almost understand if it's federal property or public property, but this is personal, private property.

pretty rude to send the letter, I think. but i'm not sure how you get from one person sending an anonymous letter to banning all religions.

There are dumb people in the world. They should be ignored.

This kind of thing is only an issue if the state starts leaning on people for this kind of thing.

What are the odds that this is another one of those fake tip note type hoaxes?

Pretty cowardly to address such a letter anonymously, too.

I don't understand the attention these things get. One person allegedly received a letter. One waitress allegedly received a note on the check ... So what?

Not from the link, but just from all the different overall news lately about removing religious symbols, the news about Gitmo removing its nativity scenes and other decorations after complaints, etc. Just seems that there's always someone insulted and complaining, so that seems the way we're headed almost.

No clue on that one - I found the story on my bing news feed. You click on it and it goes to wherever the story is posted. It can be from multiple sources (NBC, AP, Fox, Huffington Post, etc).

Indeed, this is sub-knockout game in terms of relevance and import.

It's sad in general. And yes, there are other news out there - most of which have already been covered in other threads.

You're right. It's not that important. It's an opinion message board, though, not somewhere folks get breaking news/vital news of the day. It was something I found interesting considering we're a week from Christmas. :)

You also really wonder who runs to the media because they receive a note on a check or an anonymous letter in the mail? You don't like it, throw it away and move on.

I think this was more of a general media criticism than a thread/TH criticism, so no worries.

I got a note from my roomate in college telling me to clean up my mess. My first thought wasnt to call the local media telling them I was being harrassed for my (then) sloppy lifestyle.
