You're prolly right, but I sure could see Calipari drooling over the allure of La-La Land.

Kobe and Cal. They deserve each other.

Doesn't Cal have a team returning that is even odds or better to win it all next year?

Cals ego is big enough to think he would want a job of that stature with Kobe before he retires, in a major media market etc.

Who is the last college basketball coach to have success in the NBA? I just don't understand what the Lakers are thinking. Especially with a roster that is not going to win it, even with a healthy Kobe.

Larry Brown won a national title at Kansas and won an NBA title with the Pistons.

And Tex Winter was a college coach that was barely an NBA coach (two bad years with the Rockets), but he certainly influenced a number of guys that were NBA coaches later.

Brown and Dr. Jack Ramsey (RIP) are the only coaches I can think of. And Ramsay coached in a difference era, and Brown was always more of a pro coach that somehow got the Kansas job. Plenty of Final Four coaches who failed in the pros, including Pitino, Calipari, Kruger, Tarkanian, and Montgomery.

I understand the draw for the coach. Make plenty of money in the pros, and if/when it doesn't work, plenty of schools ready to hire you when you triumphantly return to college (Pitino, Cal). But I don't understand why NBA ever hires a college coach.

Lakers haven't been thinking since Jerry Buss died. Jim wants to run things to prove he's as good as his old man and he is so not. And Jeanie, who is the best sibling, is letting him do it. Sadly dysfunctional for what was a class act for so many years under Jerry Buss.

Coach K's done a pretty good job coaching big name pros in the Olympics, though it's not quite the same and it's pretty obvious that K isn't planning to leave Duke for the NBA.

I think he realized he doesn't know how to coach NBA defense and that's why he didn't leave.

Or that he's treated like a god at Duke. He's built an almost untouchable legacy at Duke. Why leave that? Smart man, if you ask me. Same will (hopefully) be said about Billy D.

Cal probably figures his Ky team could beat what the Lakers have coming back.

And he's the highest paid coach in CBB at 7 mil per year, double what Billy makes (who is in the top 10 in CBB salary) and a couple mil more than the second highest paid coach.

Lakers aren't hiring a college coach.

I completely get the notion about not hiring a college guy for the pros, but I think Ollie might be a good fit - in the NBA at least.

I agree....x-NBA'r in his own right..managed to stay in the league many years with average skills. No doubt he can relate to the players but UCONN is upping the ante.
