I would like to know on head coach who gives "complete autonomy" to an assistant. Just one. It isn't the 70s anymore, where the head coach folds his arms at the end of the sidelines and doesn't have headset technology.

Well the Kerwin fans that apparently know him said he would def take the job, but looks like we aren't interested. Mark Long said something about work ethic questions, which is a little surprising to me.

This isn't even worth discussin considering how much you're reading into this just for the sake of trying to start a p*ssing match over it.

The work ethic bit reeks of just making an excuse beyond "we don't want to hire him"

That was from an AP writer. Why would he not want us to hire Bell?

That's what gets me about this too... why is Bell's offense suddenly not applicable to Div I? It's not like he's still using Div. II players for it.

Kerwin was throwing touchdowns in the SEC when Rhett Lashlee (Auburn OC) was still in diapers

I doubt he came up with that on his own, he got it from someone.

Couldn't we get someone who at least watches Auburn replays ?

Their offense is pretty damn sporty.

No particular positive or negative feelings about Bell, although my preference would be that we go in a different direction. But let's be sure everyone understands the facts. Bell is the head coach at JU. They have been very successful offensively, but necessarily as a team. JU is an FCS team, but plays non-scholarship football in the Pioneer League. Thus, most of the teams that JU faces each year are Pioneer League members, meaning you have non-scholarship players playing against non-scholarship players. Hard to tell with any certainty how Bell's offense in that league would work with FBS players in the SEC. Bell is not coaching an FBS (or even typical FCS) caliber of athlete, that much is known.

I just heard on the radio that Buck Belue is the first choice to run the offense next year.

I can tell you that Kerwin was a QB in the SEC and also played Miami every year along with FSU when both were at the top of college football. He ran a hell of a lot better offense as a qb here against some great players and it looked a lot better than anything I have seen around here.

Watching that video of JU is convincing enough by the mere fact I saw more downfield passes in 10 minutes than I have seen here in over 3 years. :D And not just "5 yards" downfield--I mean DOWNFIELD. Obviously a bit tongue-in-cheek here, but seriously--Bell was a GREAT QB...jnot ust good, but great. He had success in the CFL as both player AND coach, some limited success in the NFL, and did a great job at the high school level. He knows the talent level of the SEC and I would have no problem if he were to be OC here. As many have said, at worst---it could not even remotely be as bad as we have seen in 3 years. Not even in the same stratosphere.

The biggest problem I could envision--and this would apply to anyone taking the job--is what Gray alluded to, and what I think we are all worried about: being handcuffed by Muschamp and his blue collar philosophy. IF--big if here--the new OC doesn't have carte blanche to run the offense the way they know and want to run....game over. We stay in the same pattern as we have been in and even with slight improvement--that won't fly. Muschamp MUST be willing to concede the offense over to the right guy, and then back off completely. Period.

If Kerwin is happy with his present situation, why leave for what might be a one year audition?

It doesn't appear that Bell has been aggressively pursuing the life of a vagabond assistant coach, when you consider that he has remained at JU for quite a few years and hasn't gone anywhere else.
