The Washington defense. Their players said afterwards that they were taunting Manziel to see if they could get under his skin and it worked. Manziel got sacked on that play and Brian Orakpo threw up the money sign.

LANDOVER, Md. -- The Washington Redskins wanted to have a little fun with Johnny Football and get under the rookie quarterback's skin during Monday's preseason game.

They succeeded, as Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel took offense to some vocal ribbing from the Redskins and flipped them off. The gesture was caught by TV cameras and most of the Redskins' sideline.

"I can tell you what the statement was that set him off," Redskins safety Ryan Clark told ESPN Radio's "Mike & Mike" on Tuesday morning. "The statement was, 'This isn't college anymore and these people are faster than you are.' He didn't like it. And that was me cleaning up the statement. That's pretty much what it was."

so shooting a bird is no class but what the other team was saying to him was classy?

I don't care one way or the other about him but if anything the bird just shows he is not that bright.
Everyone can see the bird on tv. Noone can see what is being said back and forth between the palyers.

Well, trash talking is part of the game. Any game. Trying to get your opponent out of his game is as old as sport itself. Hard to call it class-less.

    Now, flipping a bird.....

I imagine every high profile rookie in the league gets hit with the "This isn't college" smack.

i don't understand why cussing is any different than shooting a bird.

I mean call my mom a &#$^&*#^$ but you shoot me a bird and I'm coming after you.

Trash talking can certainly cross the line into classless, but by all accounts, this doesn't appear to be that type.

I bet he will be successful because trash like him usually succeeds in the NFL.

Neither one of us know exactly what was said. I can tell you in my experience being on an nfl sidline it isn't just good old fashion ribbing.
Remember what happened in Miami with the OL guy who quit?
But most who don't like Manzel are going to point at him shootng a bird as confirmation of what they already beleive.
I know too many friends and myself included who have shot a bird every once in a while.

You're right. There's lots of nasty things being said. Why then are there so few birds being shot?

This is why I stick mostly to college ball because guys like Wuerffel and Tebow succeed and it's ok to show your faith.

This whole thing about Maziel shooting the bird is more about the fact that everyone can see it, than it is about the act itself. Nobody on the Redskins cared that he flipped them off, some even laughed at it. The fact of the matter is that kids watch the game and when they see this on TV it's bad for business, and Manziel will get fined for it.

And yes, him saying F you to the Washington bench would have been a lot better than flipping the bird because we would not be having this discussion, because nobody would have known about it.

This reminds me of Crash telling Nuke Laloosh about his million dollar arm and 5 cent head. The Browns should've told him they have 8 road games this and every year. Gonna be a long day on the road. If his skin was any thinner he would bleed when you looked at him.

I shooting a bird is classless when you are being heckled by apposing players most on here must think Muschamp was really out of line when he tried to fight a fan for heckling him at a game.
I can tell you which one bothers me way more.

Sad but true. A vehicular manslaughter charge will probably help prolong his career.

I think "tried to fight" is a little much, but yes that was classless on Muschamp's part and he'll tell you the exact same thing. That's the difference between him and Manziel. Muschamp has been nothing but a stand up guy for us, and Manziel has had multiple problems for a while now. Shame on you sir/ma'am for trying to compare them. Shame on you.

If the Washington defensive players' remarks are representative of the rest of the league, every defense in the league is gonna try to wreck Johnny this year.

I love how people put down back up QBs by saying they played against gas pumper when they fail to realize or mention that these same QBs are being told to throw the ball to gas pumpers as well. Shaw can at least be a good backup in the NFL with a patient team. His main knock seems to be arm strength.
