Met a couple from South Africa today. Been here 13 yr, brought entire family of kids, grand parents to Fla. Why?

When borders were opened, crime rose to such levels that simply going shopping required one to be armed. Mom and Dad drove along with gun in lap. Dad was always packing.

At night, never fully stop at a red light, slow down to look, but keep moving. Ditto stop signs. Bands of criminals would jump out of side of roads and rob, murder, etc.

They lived in nice neighborhood but had high chain link fence around house with barb wire on top. Neighbor across the street had car stolen from parking in front of his house, with gun held to his head.

Police were virtually powerless due to the amount of thugs on the street.

When this couple saw the gun at the neighbor's head out their window, they said we are leaving to USA now....they left. He is in upper level Finance so was able to find a job in Fla and was able to fast track a green card since his brother already lived here.

They loved their country, but it went into a cesspool of violence.

They said that USA was looking more and more like what their country.

There are cities here already like that, heck even here in Greenville, SC, you don't go to the "southside" at night ever, if you do you better be packing heat. Ghana is like that too, you don't go out there at night at all, ever.

Well it's actually looking less and less like that, unless you met them in 1983:

That is what increased inequality gets you.

If you don't reduce inequality, you have to increase segregation. Gated communities for the rich and cesspools for everyone else.

I would think that the level of violence in SA is much like it is here. Dependent on where you are.

I do think the countries share a similar racial paranoia. "Crime" is more often than not, shorthand for non-white people.

The paranoia may actually be worse there. That's why I can almost believe Pistorius' story about shooting his girlfriend.

Anecdotes are fun. Particularly when they reinforce political leanings!

Interesting, If someone says "'Crime' is increasing" ... what do they mean as regards "non-white people".

It tells me they've probably consumed a lot of media (probably featuring non-white people) involving violent crime, and dont pay much attention to actual crime statistics.

Sorta like generalizing and characterizing a person based upon their race?

No one mentions race except those who use it as a shield to deflect the question of open borders and the problem of allowing criminals in a country.

I think that's a noble objective ... but how is it done? There are countless causes of obtusity ... how are they addressed? I just think it's a huge challenge.

Just so I'm clear ... when someone says "crime is increasing" they are saying the population of non-whites is increasing? Or .. "crime is increasing" means more non-whites are committing crime?
