I don't really know about that - any Jews here that can contribute their thoughts? Ray is, isn't he?

I don't find Kerry's comments offensive at all. He's talking about national policy, not jewish people in general. He's criticized US policy many times, that doesn't make him anti-american.

It's certainly tone deaf with regard to actually trying to advance the Mideast peace process, but there are reasons that the comparison is occasionally made...

I don't think criticism of Israel, even unfair criticism of Israel, should be interpreted as anti-semitism. Kerry should be held responsible for what he said, it is his job after all, but shouldn't be accused of anti-semitism for it. Incidentally, not that it necessarily tips the scales, but Kerry is himself part Jewish.

    Agree, I don't think he's anti-semitic.

But it seems like the comments were pretty damn stupid and certainly not even remotely constructive. It was pretty much just a straight jab. Generally you probably shouldn't jab your allies.

It's hard to say that his comments weren't constructive when were not clear what he is trying to accomplish. We do occasionally need to represent pressure on Israel even if we don't mean it or have no leverage to back it up. This may very well be a choreographed part of the dance.

Peace with Israel and the Palestinians would not sit well with the Saudis, therefore it will not happen. The Saudis need an evil Israel in the narrative as part of their distracting their masses about their domestic distribution of wealth. They aren't going to give up on their boogeyman.

Yasser Arafat died with a fortune of over half a billion dollars. Who do you think bankrolled that?

No idea who bankrolled that, I just know that in the current climate of world politics, calling out and jabbing our allies doesn't seem wise. Time and place, and is this the proper time and place? I guess it's up for debate. I don't see how making comments like this could be constructive in any way, regardless of what he's "trying to accomplish." Youe hopefulness about his abilities and his intention eludes me.

I think the better way to describe what Kerry said is to say his remarks were just as stupid as Sterling's.

    I think you mean "eludes".

Basically, I'm saying that Israel is perfectly fine with the occasional jab like this from the US. It's all part of the "act". We have to occasionally pretend to set some boundaries in order to justify the billions in support we provide them.

Notice that the tough talk takes place when there is no electoral consequence, Obama is a lame duck and Hillary is safely removed this.

    It's all theater.

I dont think its unfair to characterize Israel as an apartheid state (or one approaching such a state), despite whatever social democratic qualities it possesses. I mean, the US was an apartheid state until the mid 1960s (or at least a rather large region was), despite all the great social democratic achievements here.

    I'm going to say no...

Sterling is hurtful and smart enough to know better. Kerry is ignorant, and not intelligent enough to know better.

Kerry should find his calling and be a liberal professor.
