Actually, recent history CAN tell me that.

Alabama returns 7 starters to our 3 - edge Alabama.

Alabama returns 46 sophomores and juniors to our 39 - edge Alabama

Considering they have (a) more returning starters and (b) more upperclassmen:

    2012 Statistics:

    Category---------------Alabama----------Florida

    Total Defense...................1st..................5th
    Pass Defense....................7th...............17th
    Pass Eff Def.......................7th.................2d
    Rush Defense....................1st.................4th
    Scoring Defense................1st.................5th
    Sacks...............................28th...............42d

That would be a good example. Other include some of those top 20 defenses that return most of their starters. Again, our first year starters are not better than some of these teams 2d and 3d-year starters. Our depth is NOT that great, either. It's not as bad as LSU's, FSU's or USCe's, but it's not as good as Bama or VT, either.

Lots of great defenses out there who return most of their starters and 45-55 returning lettermen.

I do expect our defense to be solid, however. Just not the best. Bama had the best defense last year, and they will also have it this year. Don't worry; our defense will still be the strength of our team, and they will keep us in games.

This I think is fair- Spurrier and Meyer's gambles thus far have paid off more often (remember how often Spurrier's trick plays or Meyer's fake punts would work it was crazy- and slamming Tim into the line isn't a trick/high risk play he only failed like 3 times in his whole career).

I don't know we've been talking about LSU as a non-factor this year but their fans look at their defense a lot like we look at ours- better despite the losses.

It's not rare at all. great DCs like Kirby Smart, Bud Foster, John Chavis and others are able to have great defenses most years BECAUSE of their desire to rotate players heavily. Muschamp does it too; the difference is with returning starters, players who are experienced playing together as a unit.

I hear you, but again, this is not unique. I certainly hope we have a top ten defense, but I am not going to throw Muschamp, Durkin and the players under the bus if we do not. History is consistent.

I think its pretty unique when your non-starters have more tackles than your starters. Sure, every team rotates. But do they really do it has heavily and with players as young as we did last year?

I mean... you like researching this stuff... show me how many other teams had two true freshmen on the DL that played as many snaps on defense as Fowler and Bullard did for us.

See history is still telling you absolutely nothing especially when you are just using arbitrary stats . You dont even know who Alabama is returning. Name the positions and players. Do you think Sunseri returning is a good thing? Do you think he will start or will Landon Collins play? Sunseri gets abused in pass coverage.

Wait a second you believe that Bama has a better defense than UF last year because of wherever you got those total defense stats from? UF was not the 5th best defense last year.

Bama fans are worried about thier depth upfront especially the NG position. They have concerns about how much help the freshmen can give them. Muschamp said today we dont really need are 4 freshmen DLmen unless someone gets hurt thus he will continue to rep them. We are probably deeper than them on the Dline

Lets do this who on Bama's team is better than our starters position by position the floor is yours. I would also love to hear about their depth with the back ups

I listen to professionals, you listen to fans. But I give up. You WIN! Florida will have the best defense in the nation in 2013. Even if they are ranked 20th, they will STILL have the best defense in the nation.

    You are relentless!

As for where I get my stats. Some fly-by-night Bama homer website:

Because they are fans. They said the same in 2008 and 2009 as well.

How many fans here predicted we would go 11-1 in 2010? After all, even the writers and coaches had us ranked 4th in the nation. How many of our fans predicted 10-2 in 2011? The national consensus was 21st.

This wasnt some battle. Honesty do you know anything about Bama's roster did you watch them play or followed their recruting? At the beginning of this discussion I pointed out a professionals opinion (one of the most highly regarded) on who had the best Dlines this upcoming year. But you pretty much ignored that.

So do professionals that you listen to and the stats tell the whole story. On paper bama defense was better but in reality I believe ours was. How many top teams did we play compared to them, who had the easiest schedule in the sec other than mutts. Im not going to say we will have a better D this year but what our D did last year with that schedule we played ur crazy not to think we weren't better. Oh also bama D had a offense that helped keep them off the field and fresh consistently.

Our defense was definitely better than Bama's. Just check performance against common opponents (A&M, LSU, UGA). It's not even close.

Bama played a HS schedule compared to ours. That's why their defense ranked higher.

Our offense was putrid, the fact that our d finished top ten is a miracle, our d was incredible.

C'mon, the nuances of this would make your head spin.

    * We played Texas A&M in their first game; Alabama played the Aggies in the tenth game.

    * Georgia's game was during the SECCG. That was for a ring.

    * You forgot Mizzou and Tennessee...

But they are a lot closer than I thought. I'll concede that much.

I just need us to get past Georgia before I start thinking about national championships and stop wondering in the reptile part of my brain whether Muschamp is doing some hardcore maximum trolling on us for being passed over by Spurrier.

For Mizzou and the Vols we gave up 27 combined, and they gave up 23.

For all of these comparisons, we had a far weaker offense than Bama providing much less support for our defense.

Outside of the head to head comparisons, I know what I saw on the field, and Bama had holes in their defense. UGA certainly exploited them. As did A&M and to a lesser extent, LSU (who had Bama beat till they went prevent at the end).

Our defense last year was stronger than Bama's by a good deal IMO. Bama's offense helped their defense a ton and they didn't play a very tough schedule, allowing them to get through.
