is Trey Burton. Yes, we use him in the wildcat and as an occasional receiver, but look at key long yardage plays he has made in his career. I believe he should get many more touches per game at RB and as a receiver if we wish to be a more dynamic offense!

RB not a chance only wildcat QB. He is going to start in the slot this year

I like to see Trey being used early in the season at RB in short yardage situations with Joyner blocking for him!

Moderator did I make a mistake? There are two identical threads about this subject when there only should be one. Please eliminate one of them.

Not a word of a lie, I was going to post something to very similar effect on this yesterday but got sidetracked. Trey is a senior but might be the least hyped part of our offense behind Jones, Robinson etc. That said, I like it that way and believe he is going to have a very productive season. His versatility is key, IMO.

He will be utilized, as will Solomon Patton, I expect Burton to get 50-60 touches this year and Patton close to 40, depending on how quickly Showers shows he can contribute.

Until one of the TEs shows up, I think they will use Burton as a possession WR out of the slot, and occasionally try to hit a seam with him.

why would you want to see him get carries as a traditional RB over Jones Brown or Taylor?

Trey is a very good player but I wish we would stop using him in the wildcat. That play is old news and rarely works for anything other than a yard or two. I like him in the slot and throwing swing passes out to him

I disagree it worked well at times last year, USC FSU UT. Wildcat needs to be in the offense it is something other teams have to prepare for and if they dont we can run it all day for chunks of yards. If they are fitting their runs against it we dont use it the rest of the game it is like any other package in our offense

Anyone who thinks that the wildcat with Trey rarely works did not see the same games I saw last year from A&M Tennessee FSU and many more Trey made teams pay when he ran the wildcat and made multiple key plays. Sure it didn't work every time but neither do passing plays or traditional runs. I am not sure where these comments come from. Check the tapes.

The 80 yard run vs. Tennessee was great. However, he ran the ball last year 29 times for 209 yards (a 6.6 yard average)...throw out that one play and he ran 28 times for 129 yards (4.6 yards).

We know that Pease likes the Wildcat, at least as an option to make the D prepare for it...and Burton runs it well. I'd like to see him throw the ball more out of that formation (at least 10% of the time, as last year he was 3 for 4 passing but only 2 of those passes came out of the Wildcat - the other 2 were fake punts). I'd like to see him lined up at WR more often.

Because Jones will miss the first 1 or 2 games and has missed a lot of contact in practice. Trey is bigger than Brown or Taylor and IMO has more power. We need power in short yardage situations!

Burton cant throw and the Wildcat is really about running the football. He is going to start in the slot so you are going to him at WR a lot.

AZ, I agree it's more "about running the football". But if the D knows he's going to run it, why not pull back (play action) and throw? People say "he can't throw", but that's bogus. He's not Tom Brady back there, but the guy is a former QB. When he comes in at Wildcat the D is expecting HIM to run. I'd like to see a pass attempt every 5-8 times he comes in as sort of a change-up.

Trey is not a power back. He's more of in space runner.

It is about how they fit the run and are they assignment sound against a different look. I know he played QB in high school but he cant throw let Jeff do that. Trey throwing the ball is just asking for a TO to happen.

They expect us to run but they dont know how we are going to do it. We have some interesting play calls with Trey at the QB. Just look at the TD Hines scored vs USC. 5-8 times seems a bit to much to me maybe 1 out of 30

Thanks I was about to post the numbers. This isn't a very effective play IMO. I wish we would find other ways to get him the ball. Defenses know he isn't going to pass

This was very effective for us until Patton went down. You have to consider the effectiveness of the jet sweep as part of this package.

It's not just about breaking a big play and not just about Burton. How many times did we get a needed first down out of the WC? How many yards were gained on the sweep or give up the middle out of the WC? There's a lot you can do out of the wild cat besides have the QB run with it.
