Never in my 30 years of watching/following sports have I ever heard of anyone watching a game because of an announcer.

However, on the other hand I won't watch a game if Pam Ward is in the booth. Absolutely terrible.

If you guys believe announcers dont bring viewers than why are they paid so much? And why are they ever fired.

Of course we dont care. We are diehards. We would watch with no sound.

But obviously announcers matter, or they wouldnt be so highly compensated.

I used to defend Vitale and generally like his enthusiasm. But it seems like the game has moved on and he's still stuck in Y2K mode. He needs some new material badly.

It felt as though he was rooting for Memphis and Kansas when we played them. Is he doing the Kentucky game?

Only one announcer actually makes me watch games that I wouldn't normally watch: Gus Johnson.

Things that bother me while I'm trying to watch a game. Especially when it's my team......

    The phone ringing
    The dog barking
People who ring the door bell soliciting even though the neighborhood has no soliciting signs at the entrances.
Someone talking to me about something that can wait and is non game related.

Now why wouldn't I be bothered when the jackwagon right there at the game is talking about lasagna or Jim Harrick..................baby?

Maybe I'm crazy but I've never watched a game and even thought about what the commentators were saying within the course of the game as it relates to play by play action. Honestly, I'm pretty sure I tune it out completely.

However, when you really think about it. Pretty much all of the great commentators of all time (regardless of the sport) were ones that were unconventional and would give random anecdotal stories, had a certain unique approach, but at the same time would be able to offer credible insight into explaining the action, and first and foremost had a real passion for the sport and/or team they were covering.

My biggest complaint with DV is that over the past few years, with his health issues and advancing age. His stories aren't getting updated, his studying of the game isn't as diligent, and he is offering less and less insight as an expert of the game.

He HAS declined big time in every and all regards.....but he has earned a great deal of leeway.

I don't think random anecdotal stories are a must have for excellent announcers. The truly great ones step away from the spotlight and call the game with sharp and relevant insights in a crisp voice that resonates and sounds like no other announcer. Vin Scully, Marv Albert are two examples of great announcers.

People realize that there are usually two announcers that broadcast a game each with different roles? The play by play guy and color commentator. Albert and Scully are both play by play guys DV is a color commentator not a play by play announcer.

I compare him to Corso in FB, a good rep for the game as a whole, but offers little of substance on the game he is calling. Vitale favors certain schools, has a man crush on Coach K and is the very definition of name dropper. Institution -yes, but offers little to what is actually going on in the game and gets annoying.

When I look at the channel guide it doesn't say who the announcers are, just the teams playing. So no, I do not think people affirmatively choose which games to watch based on the announcer. Now, as other posters above have noted, they can drive away viewers.

FWIW my cable provider shows the announcers on the guide and its never been a factor in whether I watch that game or not UNLESS it says Pam Ward. Then I'm definitely not watching. That and its usually a crappy noon game in which the stadium is half empty and sounds like they're asleep. (Big10)

    Now you have.

Vin Scully is one of my favorite announcers ever, and I will watch a Dodgers game just because of him.

Baseball is a different beast all together. There is time between each segment of action while they spit, adjust their equipment, and their equipment, call off a few signs, call time... etc. Hell, they even take a designated time to stretch. The color commentator and announcer have plenty of time to reminisce and talk about many issues. When something happens they can break into the conversation and talk about the game.

The problem with Vitale is he isn't doing color for a baseball game. He's providing it (supposedly) for a back and forth fast paced game. Unfortunately his cohort is an enabler. Shuman (sp?) has a few chances to step in and provide some play by play when Vitale stops to catch his breath, but he often just sits silent or prompts Dick toward a new tangent.

Ideally the announcer talks the most calling the action while the color commentator occasionally pipes in with relevant information or insight regarding the game being viewed. Dick, on the other hand, takes the Jackson Pollock approach to color application and his play by play guy (supposedly the one controlling the broadcast) stands by acting as his biggest fan. "Try swallowing some paint and puke that color out baby!" Actually, he is probably annoyed as hell trying to do his job next to him but has orders from up top to let Dickie be Dickie.
