This half mile shootout group had a meet a few weeks ago at Jumbolair. Most were 140-180mph. They do it again in October. http://wannagofast.com/
Another group does 1 mile runs at KSC, they are running today. http://internationalmileracingassociation.com/index.htm
There are more, can't find the group info but there was a speed run meet last month in So. Fla.
One of my alltime favorite racers in any type of car is Jac Haudenschild.
Big congrats to his son Sheldon for getting his 1st World of Outlaws win last night, driving for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
Check out how much the rear tires are stuffed into the fender well. This is the pole winning car, sitting in the garage, impounded since qualifying.
There is an archives bldg near the track full of racing memorabilia. Marvin Panch won the 1961 Daytona 500, and this is the car he drove, Not a replica, this is the genuine piece.
Interesting story in the link of how Mario Andretti wasn't supposed to win in '67.
Mario Andretti won the Daytona 500, the Formula One World Championship and the Indy 500.
I think, not sure if true, that AJ Foyt won the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of LeMans within 10-15 days.
Steve McQueen almost won the 12 Hours of Sebring, finished overall 2nd. No he was not a "token" driver, but the real deal.
Sam Posey was scheduled to drive a Ferrari 365GTB/4 in the 24 Hr of Lemans, but the car was damaged before the race. A Ferrari employee drove one (standard car out of factory) from Modena Italy to Lemans. They stripped it of the extra weight, added numbers and put it in race. It finished 9th overall....just to give you an idea of how close the show room car was to the race car.
Oh boy what a day I had Friday. I was blessed. My almost 3 yr old grandson saw his (and his dad's) first Nascar race action. They changed a wheel on a Wood Brothers display car, then we were in the fanzone/garages and a crew member from Jamie McMurray's team gave our little guy a lugnut. My son in law was thrilled because he is from MO. and so is Jamie. The grandson thought it was cool because the car has McDonald's on it. I got to say hi to a couple drivers and some other old friends. Just a beautiful, perfect weather, 200mph fun day.
Been a long time since Speedweeks weather was so nice. Daytona was great with parking, shuttles, activities, the stadium facilities and all made it very enjoyable. Now to get ready for Bike Week, St Pete Gran Prix, Gainesville Gatornationals, and 12 Hours of Sebring all in the next month.
Supercross in Tampa this weekend.
Going to try to make it over to Daytona for Turkey Run this year.
Wear your walking shoes. I wish I could still walk 5 miles to see it all. Spring Turkey Run is getting bigger each year, but not jam packed like Thanksgiving.
If you are there all weekend there is a great band playing Sat. night at The Bank, beachside on Main St. http://www.ghosttownbluesband.com/
IMSA was testing at Sebring this week. Shake, rattle, & go fast. Aaaand the #55 Mazda caught fire again. Really great audio here except the Ford GT sounds like a wet fart. Crank up the volume.
Sebring has great racing this weekend. 2 series, SVRA Vintage cars
and the beefy muscle cars of the TransAm series
Next weekend has 3 good events
Festival of Speed car show at Amelia Island
Daytona bike week has Supercross, ATV cross, Moto TT and the 200
St Pete Indycar GP and Pirelli World Challenge plus more support races (no stadium trucks this year)
I'll be at Amelia Island to view the magnificent cars!
'95 TBird that Tebow drove while in college. Rebuilt by Petty's Garage almost 5 years ago with lots of race parts including a 5.0 Coyote engine giving around 500hp
This youtube channel had lots of live stream coverage yesterday, Indycar, Pirelli World Challenge, and other support series practice & qualifying from St Pete. Not sure what it will show today.
10 years ago was the most dramatic agony of defeat moment in the history of Supercross. It rained so much they shortened the final from 20 to 15 to 12 laps. The muddy soup race track literally ate a bike and two guys couldn't pull it up. It was the definition of wet and wild. What a night.
Live drag racing in Gainesville
Pirelli World Challenge live races from St Pete today at 3:40 & 4:55 and tomorrow at 9:20am & 3:05
