Immigration enforcement officers are making 7-Eleven stores a target in their crackdown on employers who hire undocumented immigrants.

On Wednesday, agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement descended on 98 7-Eleven franchise stores across the country, where they began audits and interviewed employees and managers, according to the agency......

“Today’s actions send a strong message to U.S. businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable,” Thomas Homan, ICE’s acting director, said in a statement......

“7-Eleven franchisees are independent business owners and are solely responsible for their employees including deciding who to hire and verifying their eligibility to work in the United States,” the company said. “This means that all store associates in a franchised store are employees of the franchisee and not 7-Eleven Inc.”

They could nail a ton of illegals if they just nailed all of a city's lawn service companies at the same time.

SEATTLE — A Mexican man who spoke with reporters about his longtime girlfriend’s immigration arrest has now been detained himself, and he says agents told him it’s because he was in the newspaper......

Aburto Gutierrez, 35, told the Times in a phone interview from the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma that he was arrested last Monday morning in Ocean Shores, where he lives and works as a clamdigger.

He said an agent told him: “My supervisor asked me to come find you because of what appeared in the newspaper.”

ICE spokeswoman Lori Haley told the Times that the agency doesn’t retaliate as a rule. But when pressed about Aburto Gutierrez’s case, she declined to comment, the Times reported.

Wouldn't you rather see an American working instead of staying home? I sure would. Even if they only make minimum wage and still require some assistance from tax payers this is makes so much more sense.

I think what fast is suggesting is that it isn’t lack of opportunity at the local 7/11 that is keeping people at home.

I wish they would raid some of those Indian stores that sell 2 year old candy and stale cigarettes and always have an out of order restroom.

Re; the guy in Seattle-if you were here illegally and ICE had just arrested your girlfriend, why in the world would you speak with the newspaper and give your name?

Wonder if hiring illegals by a 7/11 franchisee is a violation of the franchise agreement?

I get why so many day labor firms hired illegals, like construction, housekeeping, landscaping, etc.-it was easy, they were paid in cash and left no fingerprints. But for a company with a corporate and reporting structure like the one 7/11 would have, it's just silly to do so.

The challenge with the most manual labor jobs is that most US citizens just won't do them. Kind of like the chapter in Freakonomics about why inner city kids would rather sell drugs than work at McDonald's.

Shhhhhhhhh. Nobody wants to cut their own grass anymore. Junior certainly isn't going to put down his smartphone long enough to do it, either.

The unemployed coal mine miners in Appalachia and/or the manufacturing workers in the rust belt can get the jobs at 7-11's now that the undocumented immigrants who were employed in those jobs are being deported.

Everytime that I've been in a 7-11 it's the same Hindu dude from the Simpsons.
I didn't think they let the usual suspects work the cash register. o_O

Current unemployment rate is 4.1%. A few hundred immigrant 7-11 jobs isn't going to make a difference for citizens, who likely don't want the job in the first place since those that want to work can find better jobs.

Currently, with a 4.1% unemployment number, there are 6,576,000 people unemployed. According to recent statistics, out of the 11 million illegals in the US, approximately 8 million are working. Deport all illegals and even if every single unemployed took a job an illegal is currently holding, you have now eliminated 2.4 million jobs from the US! Congratulations on causing a massive economic disaster!!!

Of course, not all unemployed citizens are going to take a job currently held by an immigrant. Especially given the average person in the US is unemployed for less than 6 months, and 47% of people on unemployment find a new job in under 14 weeks. For most, if not all white collar unemployed, none will choose to work part time at 7/11 over taking unemployment for a short time and put all their efforts into a job search. And certainly, unemployed white collars aren't going to work in the fields or as a hotel maid. So now you are looking at an elimination of over 4 million jobs! Congratulations, you just started the next great depression. All because you don't like immigrants.

The reality is illegal immigrants make up about 3% of our GDP, or about $400 billion a year. And their labor isn't easily replaced, even in harsher economic times. Remember the state level laws places like Alabama in 2011 and how difficult they found it to replace lost immigrant labor. That's not saying all illegals should stay, and those with criminal records or not working (non-student) should be deported. But the guy working at 7-11 who stays out of trouble? He's likely more a benefit than a detriment to society. And hassling him to deport him isn't worth the time, money, and energy.

So, you don't like those jobs? Or is that job beneath your "standards" of what Americans would like to have?

I don't think they're coveted by Americans. And it doesn't matter if I think they're beneath the standards of the type of jobs that Americans would like to have, it matters if the Americans who need jobs think that.
