I don't want this to come out wrong but what about next year's team?

I don't recall reading anything remotely close to what you are suggesting here.

There was absolutely a strain of thought that said we were too power-oriented to succeed at the new park in Omaha.

That reads significantly different from what you wrote the first time around.

I'll readily grant that no one was explicitly saying "ditch power;" that's certainly a bit of poetic license.

But the argument that small ball was the key to winning at Omaha, which I identified in the original post, was absolutely made. And if no one said verbatim "we're doing something wrong with the Zunino-Tucker core," because Zunino and Tucker were obviously great players and it would have sounded silly to say we needed fewer players like them, it's not a leap to identify "something wrong" as an obvious implication contained within the idea that we were too power-centered to win in Omaha.

So...yeah, I pretty much stand by it.

Agree to disagree. Our problem last year (in Omaha) was pitching and defense (5 errors, 24 hits, 12 runs allowed). Zunino and Tucker actually hit .357 with 5 RBI in two games. Nobody has said anything remotely close to those guys being a problem with our team in any way shape or form. But yes, people have questioned whether or not more emphasis should be placed on "small ball" given the park.

Hey, I'm with you. It was our problem in 2010 as well (we did just fine in 2011, Scott bloody Wingo notwithstanding).

Next year gators will be right back where they have been for the last 3-4 years. The pitching has been hurt this year, with almost all it returning, and most starters in general, they will be back. They could easily string some wins together this year as well.

    This.

When we lost so much from last year's team, I think we lost a few from our nearly top-ranked recruiting class to the MLB too. Combined, that was a big blow to our team, and perhaps some kids who weren't exactly ready to play yet were forced into a tough situation early this year.

All-in-all, it looks like the lights are coming on for this team. Hopefully, we can stay above .500 and inch away from that mark in the right direction as the season progresses.

Can you imagine the body damage he would have inflicted to cars on Stadium Drive?

That was my thought going into the season, but we've struggled a bit more than I expected. I certainly didn't foresee us 11th in the league with a 3.9 team ERA, but I have lots of faith in Sully as a coach. Stuff happens...

But did you ever think this team would be 3rd in the SEC in batting average and t4th in doubles (SEC-only stats):

    http://www.secdigitalnetwork.com/Portals/3/SEC Website/Baseball/2013/lgconf.htm

That without having played 4 of the worst 5 pitching teams.

The plan is for Whitson to come back next year. I think next years squad will be CWS material. Add in a couple stud recruits, and watch out. I kind of like the small ball play. Teams that play fundamentally sound baseball tend to do better at the CWS (USCe). Not to say having a couple boppers wouldn't help. Comes down to moving runners over, sacraficing when needed, and NOT MAKING BASE RUNNING MISTAKES COUGH COUGH. We get Keenan Kish and Whitson back from injury next year, which is a huge plus. Whitson has always had some kind of injury, so if he can get 100% healthy he could be a real player for us. Could set up a rotation of Carmichael, Whitson, Kish next year. Future is bright fellow gators.

Surprising stats. Almost upside down from what I would have expected. Just reflects how they have improved since conference play began. I'm sure that 10 run inning distorted things a bit.

The one thing that jumps out in the conference stats is how good Arkys pitching staff has been. They would have a heck of a team if they could catch the ball. Best pitching and worst defense.

Correct anything is possible with the draft, just heard he was leaning towards coming back. I mean he hasn't really been able to showcase his potential in game situations as much with the injuries he's had. But there are a lot of scouts that come to our practices that have come to watch him pitch, where he's done pretty well. So anything is possible. I just think it would be good for him to have a solid year before he leaves.

If he comes back healthy, he has a lot to gain by staying next year.
