Definitely marketing. Join the NRA and you'll get nonstop junk mail and plenty of phone calls, although they do cut it out once you ask them too - the phone calls at least. The junk mail keeps coming from 3rd parties even after the NRA stops sending it.

I get far more junk mail from contractors, furniture stores, mortgage companies and insurance agents who data mined my home purchase last month than I do from the NRA.

My wife in her more liberal days donated 20 dollars to the ACLU one time. To this day she gets "final notices" on a monthly basis from them to set up a membership. I'm certain they've spent more money on mailings trying to get her to join than they received from her.

I don't belong to the NRA. Don't have anything against it but don't care to join. If I were a member they would not know how many guns I owned or what kind. Neither do I constantly broadcast what I own on forums. The best way to buy guns is through individuals as long as it is legal. I don't want the government knowing about it either.

You must get a lot of junk mail then. There are things you can do to stem the flow of it, you should Google it.
