If a atheist soldier was starting to be plagued by doubts that God does actually exist then a atheist chaplain could help him/her work through it.

To deny even the possibility of a higher power, something that can be neither proven nor disproven the same as with assertions of its existence, takes a real leap of faith.

isn't Atheism the absence of the belief in God, using reason?

You're talking about 'weak' atheism, there are other varieties. And as the existence of God is a metaphysical and even ontological issue, reason is not dispositive either way.

Use of the term "chaplain" makes sense if, and only if, atheists' belief system is a religion. They claim it isn't. I don't care either way.

the atheist chaplain could also remind the soldier that when he dies, they will lower his corpse into the ground where it will rot and/or be eaten by insects and that's the end. Hopefully the atheist chaplain would follow that with "have a nice day!"

I guess "support our troops" has it's limits in both congress and on this board.

Happy to see all the religious on here finally disposing of their claim that atheism is just another religion.

If the soldier has Faith, the chaplain wouldn't need to make such a promise.

Oh, and have a nice day!

There is no religion of Atheism, most likely, but the adherents are very, very faithful.

So, Atheists should celebrate their faith and acknowledge it to the world, instead of hiding behind non-religious dogma.
