I contrasted the two because the teacher is getting blasted for not respecting the military while it wouldn't even be newsworthy if a military officer said disparaging things about high school teachers.

A Pico Rivera, California, teacher and elected city councilman, under investigation by the school board for belittling the military has now come under the radar of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly who said Gregory Salcido should “go to hell” for his remarks on the military. During an interview with Fox News Radio, Kelly, who is a retired military general himself, told Brian Kilmeade, “Well, I think the guy ought to go to hell. I just hope he enjoys the liberties and the lifestyle that we have fought for.” The incident is currently being investigated by El Rancho School District. Salcido has been kept on an administrative leave since Monday. “Our classrooms are not the appropriate place for one-sided discussions that undermine the values our families hold dear,” the district said in a statement. Salcido’s action also managed to draw criticism from Paco Rivera Mayor Gustavo Camacho, who said he was planning to strip Salcido of his committee assignments, New York Post reported. The incident first came to light when Salcido in a 5-minute speech, recorded by a student, was heard criticising the people who serve in the military. "We've got a bunch of dumb shits over there. Think about the people who you know who are over there — your freaking stupid Uncle Louie or whatever — they're dumb shits. They're not like high-level thinkers, they're not academic people, they're not intellectual people; they're the freaking lowest of our low," Salcido said in one of the recordings. Salcido’s rant apparently was in response to a student wearing a Marines shirt or sweatshirt. "You better not freaking go. Don't wear that in here," he said in one recording.

I am sure there are plenty of things the left can bring up that the right seems to fall short on- but I have this question

Why is it that libs seem to have more empathy and concern for illegals than our military?

I think most teachers are good. Some a lot better than others. There are always gonna be some duds. I remember some great teachers I've had along the way.
Let me tell you a quick story about a UF teacher I had many moons ago.
It was late 70's. I was in my late twenties and had already served 6 years in the Navy. A sophomore level World History class at UF. Young female teacher. She started going off on Harry Truman dropping the atomic bomb. Called it a racist action against the Japanese. I was pissed. I spoke up in the middle of class and told her that President Truman's decision not only saved American lives, but also Japanese lives, and helped bring about a quicker end to World War Two. I said Harry Truman was one of our greatest presidents.
She actually honored my speaking up.
I got an A in that class.
Surprised the hell out of me.

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
    Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

You got lucky there. I remember being told not to argue with most professors because it could affect your grade. Especially in cases where the grading would be subjective.

I don't remember any of my high school teachers trying to be too political in class but back then where I was at they wouldn't put up with a teacher trying to force their politics down a kids throat like many seem to do now.

Official Statement from the Pico Rivera City Council

    January 29, 2018

Statement from Pico Rivera City Council:
    Mayor Gustavo V. Camacho
Mayor Pro Tem Brent A. Tercero
    Councilmember Bob J. Archuleta
    Councilmember David W. Armenta

“We the elected governing body of the City of Pico Rivera unequivocally disagree and condemn the recent comments made by Councilmember Salcido regarding those individuals who have served or are currently serving in our nation’s military.

The City Council and residents of Pico Rivera are steadfast in the recognition that the contributions by those who have served or are currently serving our country via military service are respected and we are grateful for their service.

The City of Pico Rivera was founded upon the principles, values and sacrifices of many of our veterans who when called upon by our nation served with great pride and honor. Those men and women who have proudly served in our nation’s armed forces have proven time and again that personal sacrifice in the face of injustice and tyranny can literally change the world for the better.”

Hmmm, kiddie porn fan, violent, profane, inappropriate, inaccurate, unhinged, angry, lacking self control..... let’s see what the teachers union and the school board does.

Well if you want to contrast the two, if this guy was in the military would have been separated from service long ago, possibly court martialed.

Maybe one of the difference is the military does a pretty good job of holding people accountable for what they do.

I think the point was well-made upthread that this should not devolve into a teachers vs. military argument. There is no winner there and I imagine there are detailed systems of accountability in both domains (I'm certain of it for teachers). Those systems obviously do not always work, but there will be breakdowns in any such sizable system.
