90 million for an old quarterback who cannot throw the ball down field with velocity and who was one hit away from ending his career. Manning had a great year, but when you make a deal like Elway made, you are going 'all in' . Anything less than a superbowl victory for the broncos is a total failure. We will never know how the Broncos would have performed had they kept Tebow and upgraded the team with some of that cash. It may have taken a couple of years for Tim to elevate his game, but long term the jury is still out on the signing of Peyton,

I was thrilled the Broncos lost and the manager they lost in. they could be in big trouble because Peyton Manning's best years are behind him in my opinion. also, Seattle has some more great years ahead of them

For sure. TT could have learned behind Manning and helped the team in some situations. I think everybody would have been better off. Elway messed that up and needlessly disrespected TT in the process.

It made sense to take Manning over Tebow, and it was a business decision. With that said, nobody can guarantee that having gone about it in a douchey way wouldn't bite him in the a55 the way it did, in the form of another Superbowl embarassment

    1. "Cannot throw the ball with velocity"? Are you serious? He only had a record setting season through the air.
    2. "One hit away from ending his career"? what qb isn't?
    3. "Anything less than a Super Bowl is a TOTAL FAILURE?!? Getting to the Super Bowl is NEVER a Failure.

I'm out of this thread. Peace..

Love that the Seahawks "bitch-slapped" Elway's Broncos! It didn't occur to me that I might have held what they did to Tebow against them, but I guess that may have played into my loyalties! I was was never a Manning fan ever since he dumped on Ole Miss and ran off to Tennessee back in the 90's. He was a whining PITA throughout his college career and continued that same whiny attitude in the NFL. Yes, he has been a great pro QB and has lots of records, but he got what he deserved in the Super Bowl! Go Seahawks! Ooops!….I think Seattle just scored again!!!

Cowherd was discussing with someone how the only reason Manning chose the Broncos is so he wouldn't have to face stout defenses week after week. Obviously stats lie.

I get putting Manning in there but I thought Elway should have kept Tebow around. I think he needed two or three years in backup role and that would have been perfect. I didn't understand getting rid of Tebow - he was pretty cheap and most people in Denver really liked him. It ended with Tebow landing with that joke of a franchise in NY and finally with him being a shell of himself in New England. It doesn't look like he's going to get another chance.

Elway took a reasonable gamble and doubled down by exiling Tebow. I told my Denver colleagues that Tebow was going to call in an airstrike because of that and it looks like he did.

It's amazing how far a slam-Elway thread has strayed!

I have never been an Elway fan, going back to his whining after losing his last college game to Cal, Stanford's arch rival. I can't imagine a CFB fan not knowing the story, but for those who might not, Elway led a march to score and take the lead with seconds to go. Stanford kicked off and with six laterals between five players Cal scored to win. The Stanford band was already marching onto the field and the Cal runner had to pass through them in the end-zone. And Cal only had 10 men in the play. The guy I carpooled with (a Cal alum) was at the game. He said it was bedlam. After the game Elway was complaining that Cal should have been penalized for not having enough men on the line, never mind the number behind the line was correct.

I have read several stories that seem to indicate Elway's not the nicest person. But I do have a three degrees of Kevin Bacon story that at least gives Elway a modicum of humanity.

My mom used to get her hair cut by the lady who cut Elway's hair. So while out there for Christmas a decade or so ago, my son and I both got our hair cut by her, just to say we did. The lady, who was middle-aged and divorced, told of how she was dating a guy who was a lawyer (or something like that). The new boyfriend wanted her to meet his friends, and so four couples went out to a very nice Denver restaurant. The other couples were all professional people, and the women snobbishly looked down on her for just being a hair stylist.

They were sitting near the restaurant's private party room where a Christmas party was going on. Elway walked in and headed to the party. The hair stylist said to her group, "Look! There's John Elway. I should go say hi." The other women were horrified and begged her not to embarrass them, so she didn't get up.

Some time later Elway came out to head to the restroom and saw the hair stylist sitting with her group. He immediately waved and called her name as he walked over. He gave her a hug, wished her a Merry Christmas, and asked to be introduced to her friends.

I love it when snobs are shown up and when celebrities recognize us "little people." So for all his other faults, I do give him points for that.
