Honolulu police officers have urged lawmakers to keep an exemption in state law that allows undercover officers to have sex with prostitutes during investigations, touching off a heated debate.

Authorities say they need the legal protection to catch lawbreakers in the act. Critics, including human trafficking experts and other police, say it's unnecessary and could further victimize sex workers, many of whom have been forced into the trade.

Hawaii cops should be required to threaten them with arrest to get it like they do in the other 49.

They're supposed to be doing a job, not getting their rocks off. Let them keep their exemption, but only if they don't finish. If they do, the prostitute will have evidence to have it thrown out of court. Then see how many of them insist on keeping the exemption. That'll give "Stop or I'll shoot!" a whole new meaning.

That isn't really what this thread is about, though.

    Only tangentially.

This is fundamentally about whether cops can break the law in order to enforce it.

And they shouldn't. Why is it so hard difficult in Hawaii, specifically Hawaii, to prove prostitution without the happy ending?

Although I also agree with 108 that prostitution being illegal is silly, so long as it is this setup is a joke. I doubt that undercover cops there get to do drugs all day to bust dealers or kill people to bust organized crime. Assuming that's true, that kind of shows you how dumb it is to pursue this as a crime. Generally, if the Watchmen get to do the crime itself, then it's really not much of a crime to begin with, IMO.
