Food stamp rolls have been growing rapidly. But what many may not realize is that participation among able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) has been skyrocketing compared to the total number of participants. That’s just one reason Congress should reform the food stamp program in the farm bill now under consideration. In just four years, the number of able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs) on the food stamp rolls skyrocketed by over 2 million. While overall food stamp use grew by 53 percent between Fiscal Year 2007 and Fiscal Year 2010 (from about 26 million to nearly 40 million), it more than doubled among able-bodied adults without dependents during this time–from 1.7 million to 3.9 million–an increase of roughly 127 percent. Food stamp spending today is roughly $80 billion, double what it was in Fiscal Year 2008.

The Obamacare navigators needed something to sell that people would buy for free.

Newsflash: You can be an able-bodied adult, with income, no kids and qualify for food stamps without "gaming the system."

That suggests to me that the system is broken.

That was derisive...and much more strategic than I think you want to believe. Make no mistake, 2012 was mostly about officially playing the victim and class warfare cards. And don't think they are going to stop anytime soon. Just like negative campaigning, you say you want it to stop but as long as it works, that is all that matters.

In what way? You do realize that you can have a job or be doing things that pay below the poverty line. For a HH of 1 the poverty line is like $11,490/yr. Is the system "broken" if able bodied people who do internships or adjunct or do all sorts of productive things that don't earn much money get food stamps to supplement whatever minimal income they get?

BTW, there are many able bodied adults working for the likes of McDonalds and Wal-Mart who are directed by their corporate overlords at hiring time on how to apply for food stamps.

Show me one news article link that has proved the above. Talk about Fox News. You need to watch something other than Al Jazzera or MSNBC Fred. I have never heard of this except through your accusations on TH.

Plenty of articles in the Daily Kos and other liberal a$$ wipes re Walmart being the biggest recipient of "food stamp dollars spent". No chit. They are the largest retailer by far with the cheapest prices.

But nowhere do you see anything proven about them or any other corporation handing out food stamp applications. Me thinks you must be thinking about Obama Acorn or Navigator programs.

At $8 per hour, one's take home pay at 40 hours per week would be about $1250 per month. That puts you in food stamp territory. Moc's post makes a good case for raising the minimum wage so these able bodied people don't have to go on food stamps.

I didn't read the OP because I don't want to ruin my chances at guessing.

Q: Guess What Group is Getting Food Stamps at an Alarming Rate?
A: Conservative senior citizens who vote Republican.

I like this answer because we all know there are conservative senior citizens who vote Republican on food stamps, but Republicans don't like to talk about those takers, preferring to focus on the takers who better fit their worldview.

It took about 2 seconds using The Google to find multiple examples:

Non-propaganda information can be very enlightening!

So if McDonalds paid her $15/hour, you think she would not need food stamps? You think she could then pay for her Obamacare plan? Fred, this is not an example of anything other than a McDonalds HR representative trying to help a lower income worker. Good for her. Good for McDonalds. Most who work at McDonalds are kids living at home. Others are not the sole wage earner in their household.

What you libbies fail to grasp is that low wage jobs are for the low/no skills or beginning worker. Unfortunately, due to the Obama economy, which is not growing, move up positions are not available. So experienced and older workers (not on the dole) are taking the jobs normally filled by kids. And no matter what people are paid, it comes down to priorities. People will upgrade their cell phone, TV, cable package, rims, extensions and get their weekly nail job before they will pay for healthcare. Because healthcare costs should be someone else's responsibility....yours and mine even though we already pay for our own.

Shouldn't we be thankful that Walmart and the others are employing single mothers like Nancy, Fred. By the way, I think its the Nancy's of the world that are the biggest waste of tax payer funded welfare, not poor old people.

The first statement seems highly dubious, and the second one is probably even more so. But feel free to provide a link or to back these statements up.

Walmart should be thankful that the government acts as a de facto wage subsidizer too.

Upward mobility has been on a downhill slide since 1980. Pretending like it started in 2009 is ludicrous. It's caused by income inequality and increasing the distance between levels on the economic ladder for climbers.

If you are truly "able-bodied" and can't earn enough to feed yourself in 21st-century America, then you're not trying. At all. I don't have a problem with giving food stamps to the elderly, disabled, or poor mothers of young children.

As for all those productive interns, it's not my place to subsidize the lifestyle of a bunch of Lesbian Left-Handed Midget Albino Eskimo Studies majors. If they want to eat, they should sell their iPads and go out and get a paying job like their parents did. Even if it's something that they don't want to do.
