Both Brandi and Thornqvist have 3 national championships. Thornqvist only has 8 SEC Championships in 12 seasons.

    About Coach Brandi...

    - 3 national championships
    - won the SEC 14 times in 17 seasons
    - overall won-loss record was 460-43
    - 103-0 at home against SEC competition
    - 53-match SEC winning streak
    - every freshman that played 4 years under Brandi played for a national championship, was a part of at least 3 SEC Championship teams, and earned ALL-SEC honors
    - his teams never lost to SWAC

Billy is fantastic, deserves this sort of recognition, and I wouldn't trade him for anything, but if we're looking across the board for best coaches at UF, I don't think his accomplishments compare to those of Andy Brandi...I don't think Spurrier's accomplishments do either (and he'd be the first to tell you that).

    Go GATORS!

Not sure if we need to compare regular opponents (the years we played them):

    Opponent--------------------1990-2001-------------2002-2013------Edge

    Alabama.................................89-24-1 (.785)...............64-15 (.810).......Post SOS
    Arkansas................................16-19-0 (.457)................40-35 (.533)......Post SOS
    Auburn...................................97-54-3 (.639)................37-15 (.712)......Post SOS
    Florida State.........................139-20-1 (.872)..............111-46 (.707).......SOS
    Georgia...................................90-51-1 (.637)..............118-41 (.742)......Post SOS
    Kentucky................................48-87-0 (.356)...............61-86 (.415).......Post SOS
    LSU.........................................72-65-1 (.525).............125-33 (.791)........Post SOS
    Ole Miss/Miss State...............43-46-2 (.484)...............49-49 (.500)......Post SOS
    Tennessee..............................117-28-3 (.801)................85-66 (.563)......SOS
    USCe.......................................49-63-1 (.438)...............93-68 (.578).......Post SOS
    Vandy.....................................32-77-0 (.294)...............55-91 (.377)........Post SOS
    BCS OOC Teams...................14-9-0 (.609).................47-18 (.723)........Post SOS
    Bowl Teams...........................90-19-1 (.823)..............105-37 (.739)........SOS

    Total W/L record.................896-652-14 (.578).........990-600 (.623)......Post SOS

Looking at it from top to bottom quality:

    1990-2001---------------------------2002-2013----------------Edge

    Florida State (.872).............................Alabama (.810)..................SOS
    Bowl Teams (.823).............................LSU (.791)..........................SOS
    Tennessee (.801).................................Georgia (.742)...................SOS
    Alabama (.785)...................................Bowl Teams (.739)............SOS
Auburn (.639).....................................BCS OOC Teams (.723)....Post SOS
    Georgia (.637)....................................Auburn (.712)....................Post SOS
BCS OOC Teams (.609)....................Florida State (.707)............Post SOS
    LSU (.525).........................................USCe (.578)........................Post SOS
    Ole Miss/Miss State (.484)................Tennessee (.563)................Post SOS
    Arkansas (.457)..................................Arkansas (.533).................Post SOS
    USCe (.438)........................................Ole Miss/Miss St (.500)....Post SOS
    Kentucky (.356)..................................Kentucky (.415)................Post SOS
    Vandy (.294).......................................Vandy (.377).....................Post SOS

Spurrier's Gators played more top end teams, but also played more cupcakes (or at least a higher percentage of them). The post-SOS era had a tougher schedule.

Billy D no doubt. Plus Billy didn't leave the school for another opportunity. Also it should be between Urban and Billy for best coaches at UF. Steve is the most symbolic and I am not trying to discredit him. But if we are talking about best coaches Urban>Spurrier. Accomplished more national championships in a shorter time period, and dominated all of our rivals for the most part. Of course I don't like Urban, I think he is a P.O.S but it would be silly for me to discredit what he did in his time here, don't act like we didn't love those two national championship teams. The 08 team is the one of the best ever.

SOS didn't play as many cupcakes OOC as we have in recent years. When was the last time we played a northeastern team on the road? Spurrier's Gator's played in the Carrier Dome. Outside of FSU, our OOC schedule most years is quite wimpy.

I think Spurrier would have more national championship if they were actually won on the field. His team that whipped WVU in the Sugar Bowl was real good by year's end ... a fantastic bowl team given all of the cerebral players.

The only possible debate is between Urban and Billy.

    Spurs is a distant 3rd.

Really tough. I am gonna choose Billy because Billy did it in a state that has some bball talent, but Florida is not the talent hotbed in bball like it is in football. Also while SOS took the football program to a new level Billy took the bball program that had even less success than our football program prior to Spurrier. This is still a football school first bball second. Winning at UF in football is like winning at Kentucky in basketball. It's not a huge challenge.

You can say Meyer was better, but not greater. Spurrier has longevity in his favor.

Let's look at this in a different way.. 1) you didn't include Miami.. Miami, FSU, Georgia and Tennessee were by far our 4 biggest rivals, and arguably, Miami, FSU and Georgia were our biggest rivals recruiting wise. Miami and FSU, during the SOS era, were far better than now, and much bigger adversaries for recruits than they have been during the 2000's post SOS.. I get that Bama, LSU, and the SEC west in general have been much better than during SOS's tenure, however these team historically have not been as much of a threat recruiting as the Florida and SEC east teams. If you read my post, I do mention recruiting.

    1. That's why they count the entire season;

    2. Two games prior to the Sugar Bowl against the 'Eers, they lost by double digits to FSU.

I didn't include Miami for a REASON. Spurrier only played the Canes once and got badly stomped by them. Miami always recruited Dade County well, then and now. Pell recruited as well as Miami in the 1980s (creatively, of course, but no one can tell me the Canes didn't cheat). As for Alabama and LSU, they get MANY studs out of Florida.

No, while SOS had to play tougher teams at their BEST (FSU, Tennessee and the bowl game), from top to bottom, it wasn't as strong.

This is my favorite poll on GC ever.

The integrity of these two as leaders, teachers, set the bar for others to emulate. Both of them are men who, beyond the court/field, have impressed upon their student charges how to live right. College is place the young go to learn and become adults, and we couldn't have had finer instructors than these two. That they did that, AND reached the pinnacle on the playing surface, solidifies how special they are, how blessed we are.

And Mary Wise has been pretty great, too.

Billy, Calhoun and K are the winningest coaches in the nation over the past 20 years, based on meaningful results...Elite 8's...Final 4's...Conference and National championships.

For me, Billy passed Steve in 2007...its all gravy now...he is simply running up the score on Steve. (pun intended)

Had this been a poll about simply the greatest Gator ever...well Steve would make it much closer, due to being a playing legend as well.

My rankings in the big two sports:

    1. BD
    2. Steve
    3. Urban
    4. Lon
    5. Galen

I was at the chiropractor's today. He's a big time Buckeye fan but when he saw my Gator shirt he said Billy D is one of the greatest coaches of all time. When people that don't wear O&B glasses say things like that, we know we have a great one.

This makes no sense because SOS went undefeated in the entire regular season including the SEC in 95 and did it again in the SEC in 96.
