2-1 Gators going into the top of the eighth.
Called strike three on the first Arky batter. Called strike three on the second one. Called strike three on the third one. Pitcher is Rhodes (sp?). Going to bottom of the 8th.
Chopper to third. One out for the Gators. Called strike three. Two outs, nobody on. And strike three….3 up, three down for the Gators. Going to the 9th with Gators up 2-1.
Would be a nice win if they can hold on
Gators win 2-1. Good job! Not a lot of hitting but they did just enough to win. Gators had a couple of wasted opportunities to add on more runs (in the 4th inning bases were loaded with 2 outs and Reed struck out; in the 6ht inning man was on 3rd and 2nd with 2 out and Martin flied out) but the pitching held firm. Also much nicer outing by Rhodes (2.1 innings of no hit ball) vs his previous relief outing (gave up 3 runs in one inning of work) in the last game.
Struck out swinging! 5 in a row for this pitcher. 1 out. Ground out to 2nd--easy out. Two away. Strike out!!! 6 of 7 batters struck out to end the game. Gators win 2-1!!!!
Thanks, nice start to conference play. Don't know much about This Arky team, but they have played well against the Gators in recent years so happy to see a win to start the weekend. Looks like Shore is the real deal.
Logan Shore's change up is disgusting. He's going to be effective all year with that pitch against hitters than have never seen it before.
Congrats on the win gators. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if you get the sweep...we're definitely in a rebuilding year. We've lost five 1-run games so far so thats disappointing. If we keep it up we could be in danger of missing a regional for the first time since 2003...we have some talent though so hopefully we can keep improving
yes you do have some talent - especially on the mound. Beeks was really good and you have a freshman, Zak Jackson, who entered the game hitting 96mph with his fastball and able to use his slider as a strikeout pitch. He needs to develop command a little bit but I was impressed. Watching BP, I liked #29 (lefty 1B) and #1 (2B) in the cage but only saw 1 group hit.
I thought both teams were mirror images of each other -at least last night - great pitching, good defense, not enough hitting - especially clutch hitting.
P.S. Please have your sports information guy send UF your player's statistics. For some reason, last night the scoreboard did not/could not post any of your hitters averages, HRs, or RBIs .
Welcome to the board, I think we are in the same boat as you guys.
Yeah Jackson is going to be a good one...reminds me of Stanek his freshman year. Shore was awesome for you guys too, might have another hudson randall on your hands.
Last year our beast pitching staff covered up our lack of hitting in a lot of games but after losing all 3 weekend starters and our closer if we dont hit, its hard for us to win. I thought we did ok last night though especially with two of our normal guys out.
It's probably a good thing the scoreboard didn't post our averages for a few of the guys haha
Not sure if this is the right thread to mention this but UF starts things right in their 2nd matchup with Arkansas with Alonso homering in the 1st inning to give UF an early 1-0 lead.
Just to continue, Gators still lead Arkansas 1-0 now in the top of the 4th inning in the 2nd game of this series. Pitchers of both teams are doing well and looks like it will be another low scoring game if it keeps on like it has so far.
Pitchers doing well or just anemic hitting? Seems we've been facing a lot of Cy Young award winning pitching.
Probably a bit of both. But nonetheless, Gators continue their winning streak with a win of 1-0 over Arkansas! Gators go for the sweep of Arkansas tomorrow. Go Gators!
Weird game today. Arky leads 6-3 in the 7th. Something happened at the end of the Saturday game that put a bug in Arkansas' rear, and it carried over to today. Their first baseman looks like he's actively trying to start a fight.
Question for the rule book wonks: when the Arky pitcher threw the ball into right field trying to pick off Alonso and the Arky 1B man fell on top of him, I saw the umpire make a motion, presumably calling obstruction. Alonso made it to 2nd base anyway. BUT if he had attempted 3rd base he would have likely been out but would he have not been awarded the base due to the obstruction? I think the key is you have to attempt to get there and since Alonso just pulled into 2nd, awarding 3rd was not in question. I saw Sully come out and talk to the home plate ump and wonder if it was over this question.
Oh well, no sweep, but at least the Gators won the series. Didn't start the game on the right foot and it kind of snowballed from there. Anyway, hopefully the Gators will learn from this loss and play better in their next game against an always tough FSU. It would be nice to have a bounce back win before going to play on the road against Texas A&M which is 14-7, 1-2 (SEC). Texas A&M lost their weekend series to Auburn 2 games to 1, but in their last game this Sunday, they beat Auburn 9-0, so they've definitely got some firepower.
