The postseason has arrived for the sixth-ranked University of Florida women’s golf team. With a two-week period between their last competition and now behind them, the Gators will begin competition at the SEC Championship tomorrow in Birmingham, Ala. in hopes of claiming its ninth conference title in school history. The last time Florida won the SEC championship was in 2008. Last year, Florida finished in fourth place with then-freshman Camilla Hedberg finishing tied for sixth as the Gators top finisher. Play this weekend will consist of three rounds starting on Friday and run through Sunday.

The SEC Championship will be played at the Greystone Golf and Country Club (Par 72, 6,401 yards) and the field will consist of all 14 member schools. Six schools, including Florida, are currently ranked in the WGCA/Coaches’ Poll. Alabama holds the highest ranking at No. 2, followed by Florida (No. 6) and Arkansas (No. 7). Vanderbilt is the fourth SEC team in the top-10 at No. 10, and Georgia (No. 19) and Texas A&M (No. 22) round out the top-25.

“We have high expectations,” Florida head coach Emily Bastel said. “Our conference in women’s golf is deep, just like every other sport. We’ve gone back and forth with a lot of the top SEC schools this year. I think it’s going to be a really exciting championship. There are a lot of teams that can play well and we’re definitely one of them, we’ve proven that. I think our expectations are high. We want to go out and win and I know we’re capable of doing that. We talk a lot about the process of how we’re going to do that, which is actually not thinking about winning and breaking it into the really small things that we can control each day that we’re out there on the golf course. We’ve proven over the course of the year when we do those things, it all falls into place for us. When we make it simple for ourselves, we definitely have enough talent to win.”

Florida is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Bryan National Collegiate, its final regular season tournament of the year. Freshman Ursa Orehek (Domzale, Slovenia) was the top Gator finisher after she carded a final round, one-under (71), which was her first under-par round of the year and also tied her for 17th place, her highest finish of the year as well. With its fifth-place finish, it also continued Florida’s streak of nine-straight top-ten finishes. Every tournament Florida has played in this year has seen a top-ten finish with its lowest finish (T10) coming at the AllState Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in late February.

Off to a good start today. UF, Duke, and Oklahoma are the 3 best teams, and they are the three leaders as they reach the turn in the first round.
Okla -4
UF -3
Duke -2
No one else under par

Finishing the front 9 strong, take the lad at 6 under

Upside is that UF's best player by far is Hedberg, and she is 4th on the team at E.If she gets hot they could really have a great day. Downside is the #5 golfer s 4 over and likely will not be able to help if one of the top 4 stumbles.

UF had it to -8 and a 5 stroke lead, but gave 4 strokes back and now trail Duke by 1.
Oklahoma back at -1 then 4th is way back at 3 over.
Hedberg at 2 over is hurting, 3 others are playing very well. Lendl has second lowest stroke average and she is not playing.

Uf going with one senior, one junior, 2 sophs, one freshman....really young lineup

Correct....nice rebound thus far from a dismal SEC tourney...which was far and away their worst performance of the year.
Back tied with Duke at 6 Under about halfway thru back 9

Any idea what happened to Isabelle Lendl (our #2 and top 20 nationally all year)?

Shocked that even without her the girls appear to have rebounded from SEC's in a huge way - unless one of the weaker teams gets hot in the afternoon pairings, it looks like we will share the lead with OU at -5 going into round 2.

Hedberg's score changed for the better from +3 to +2.

Gators now sole leaders at -6 through round 1.

They have settled down and are five back of OU and 11 ahead of the 4th place team.

Duke is in second place.

Eight teams advance from each region....

So much for settling down, played bad throughout the round. They hung on to third, but shot 19 over and now stand 20 shots out of first.
Worst of all, they are only 3 shots clear of 10th place. Totally bunched up from 3rdto 10th and UF could easily drop out of advancng if they play anything remotely close to todays performance

gators playing a bit more steady today -
+1 for the day. some birdies some bogeys some pars on the cards.
still only 2 shots away from the cut line.
miss state at 11 under on the day, so teams can go low on this course. got to watch out about that, don't want to be near that cut line to be bumped out of contention.

Hot start to the back nine, now -5 on the day and +8 for the tournament, 11 clear of the 9th place team. Just need a solid finish now to advance.
