In the second of the 3 scrimmages today Bell hit his second home run - encouraging.

Langworthy got 2 Rbi's. Frosh Jose Ciccarello was 3/4 and Horvath was 3/5.

    Horvath having a good Fall.

There was a mention about highly rated frosh pitcher Tommy Mace retiring all 6 batters he faced with 4 strikeouts.

Starters at the same position for both games:

    Baker/Horvath - CF
    Langworthy - LF
    Dalton - RF
    India - 3B
    McConnell/Blasucci - SS
    Reese - 2B
    Butler/Bell - 1B
    Smith - C

In the last of three scrimmages frosh catcher Cal Greenfield, said to be a great hitting prospect, got an rbi double.

Noteworthy is Senior Horvath's performance. He was 8/12 for the 3 games with 3 home runs; 4 Rbi's and 7 runs scored. He also pitched 2 scoreless innings.

He consistently did well during the fall.

Definitely seems that Sully expects Horvath to be our starting centerfielder. Early in fall there were talks of Dalton in CF, but he started in RF in at least the first two games. Combine that with Horvath's numbers in the series and I'd expect he'll be given every opportunity to lock down the CF spot over the first 4 weeks.

If Dalton is as good as advertised that's going to make for a crowded outfield between Horvath, Dalton, Langworthy, and Maldonado.

Lefties and Righties to plug into the starting line-up depending on the opposing pitcher. And having the opposite hitting guys ready to PH late in the game.

A nice "problem" for Sully to have next season.

    Note on Horvath:

Perfect Game had him at 5-11 168 in high school.

Per the roster handed out for Fall practice the senior was up to 5-11 201 and performing like a power hitter.

Do we need a power hitter? :)

    5220-
    Well--
It might cause Sully to have to juggle the line-up--

But I'm sure he can work with it...:D

A power hitter that can pitch?

I'll take a Babe Ruth any day.

I really hope freshmen infielders Brady McConnell and Shane Shifflet get significant playing time. Both were hitting well during Fall. We do have a good S & C program I believe and these guys need to bulk up.

I want to see how their remarkable speed can help us. It will be fascinating to see how this plays itself out for us.

More here on Horvath trending. In Summer leagues he batted .381 with 4 homers and 8 doubles and was noted for excellent outfield play.

Pretty amazing - he probably didn't have a handful of extra base hits all last season.

Horvath hit .186 last year and .143 in 2016, which is actually kind of staggering, if you think about it. He has shown a reasonable bit of patience - 20 walks in 98 at-bats over two years.

But summer leagues and fall ball notwithstanding, you can count me...very skeptical that we're going to get anything offensively out of Nick next year. Doesn't mean he can't be useful - you can deal with one limp bat in a lineup, especially if it comes from a solid defender at an up the middle position. And if we get solid offensive performances from the likes of Bell, Langworthy, Dalton and McConnell, we could have a really solid lineup top to bottom, making it possible to carry Horvath's glove in the 9 spot.

Our issue last year was that we spent huge chunks of the season with three, four or even five offensive non-entities in the lineup, which made it impossible to put up any runs.

I heard Shifflett needed a lot of work on his defense.
