Well, that hasn't happened in the novels yet ... per se. The one redeeming quality about Stannis to this point -- and this isn't really a spoiler -- is that he is the one king who goes to the defense of the kingdom when the Night's Watch send out its pleas for immediate assistance against the Wilding army and, of course, the Others (White Walkers). Everyone else seems more interested in protecting their individual stakes than in dealing with the true external threat to them all.

With 7 different story lines going on, it is hard to give much attention to some of the minor ones. You have Bran on his trek, Arya and the Hound going somewhere, Stannis, Daenerys, Castle Black, wildlings, and everything at Kings Landing. This is season 4 and I think it is about 75% of the way through the third book. How many years does HBO plan on taking to finish this?

I think 7 seasons is what they've agreed on. They won't have much of a choice with all the actors getting older. They're going to have to cram books 4 and 5 into season 5 which will probably be the weakest since nothing happens in those books.

It is supposed to last 8 or 9 seasons. After this season we will be through book 3. Books 4 and 5 cover the same timespan but from different character perspectives. Because of this I imagine they will combine books 4 and 5 and run through them chronologically in 2 seasons (or possibly 1). That will put us through season 6 of the show. Season 7 will be for book 6 and season 8 for book 7. This is assuming those books are actually published by then.

I don't think two seasons will work for books 4 and 5. Those two were major letdowns after what was easily the best in book 3. Two seasons of Daenerys and Tyrion's storylines in book 5 would not be pretty. Sadly, I don't see how the show doesn't pass up the books at this point.

Life's tough. It's even tougher in Westeros.

    And winter is coming.

Oh, I thought you watched the first episode. You watch last Sunday's... Gotcha!!! Yes, definitely rape, incest, and some possible necrophilia.

GoT has some stuff like that, but I believe that has been the worst of it in 3.5 seasons. I wouldn't let that make up your mind. If you're going to start though, you should start from the beginning. Of course, the first episode (maybe it's the second), has some incest as well (same two people). But as far as I remember, no other incest!!! :D
I don't remember any other rapes either... just one attempted rape. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!!!

Seriously though, it is the best show on TV. If you're going to do it, do it right and start from the beginning.

You should just watch the very first episode and determine if it captures your interest.

Speaking for self, Sword and Sorceror is not my genre. I did not read Lord of the Rings, and unlike most people, I did not enjoy the movies. When HBO started promoting GoT, I rolled my eyes at all of the Magic:The Gathering dorks who were sexually aroused at the thought of Kaleesi made flesh and such.

That said, I was stuck in a hotel room and the pilot episode was the only thing on TV circa April 2011. I was pretty impressed and kept watching. Then I had to read the books. Now I would say it's easily my favorite program on television.

My two cents, Bill: Watch that pilot and then make up your mind.

My friends kept raving about the show and would get together to watch it (this was during season 2). I was on a flight back to the US from India and they had the whole season on the tv in the headrest. The flight went very quickly.

Bill--excellent series, I agree with others, watch it from the start. It is kind of a classic good vs evil plot.
