Thanks to the federal government my daughter gets "free" breakfast and lunch at school. Absolutely ridiculous but that is the way our incompetent government operates...

To think it is something like $1.70 makes it even more ridiculous. Then you add all the wasted food associated with making sure there is enough if every kid decides to eat. I am glad she got into the magnate program but you just can't make some of this stuff up.

Fox news brought on 2 so called experts to debate the issue-that does not mean Fox News is endorsing this lune's side- the story in the link does not support the thread title at all

Its a stupid argument. Plenty of research has shown that people make worse decisions when experiencing stress or worry. If you're hungry, your not going to be focused on math, you're going to be focused on being hungry. Moreover, punishing the kids to teach the adults "a lesson" is just a total d$ck move.

996, be honest. Do you want the US taxpayers and your neighbors to provide food, clothing, shelter, health care, retirement security and a free phone to yourself and every other citizen? Is this what you really want?

Stay on point...this is a discussion about operating a food program.

If you want to discuss "Obama-phones" start a thread about it but don't try to deflect a discussion about an issue in the news right now with your continued general misguided position about cell phones.

    Thanks.

Honest question: How did anyone determine that Mr. Kersting was a republican? Does he hold some elected office?

Whether or not he's on point depends on what the point is.

If the point of the thread is that they shouldn't throw food away in front of a kid just to "teach them a lesson". Then he's off point and I agree you.

If the point of the thread is that kids should be entitled to "free" meals at school just because their parents would rather spend their money on non-necessities than food for their own children then he's on point.

    This!

Here is Marion County taking federal dollars just because they are there...

    http://www.ocala.com/article/20130816/ARTICLES/130819802/0/search

I chatted with the principal about this ridiculous use of funds and she feels the same way as those funds could be used for something much more useful. Instead of wasting food at a school that is not even Title 1...

A teaching moment is far far from teaching them a lesson - especially when used as it was in the title of this thread...to mean almost punishment.

You typed a lot but still refused to answer the question, why? Would it have taken more time to simply say yes or no? I think you didn't want to answer because you do feel the government should provide these things to anyone that is too lazy to work.

A lot of kids don't have lunch money because their parents do not have cash lying around and laziness of organizing the kid for the day. It is not because they cannot afford it.

As for learning a lesson, I was a hungry kid in school. I vowed to do well in school and never be in that position in my future. I learned to get out of poverty. Getting out of poverty motivated me every day to work harder to the point that I wound up at Princeton for graduate school and have a very nice paycheck now. My wife does not work and I have 3 kids plus my parentless and formerly homeless 3 neices and nephew.

Those kids were raised in a drug culture with irresponsible and damaging adults living off the government. There is zero motivation for them. In fact my 13 year old niece asks me why would I work if I could live off the government and spend more time with my family and that I must be stupid if I could not figure out how to live off the government. It is appalling.
