I guess Zimmerman did not claim a stand your ground defense. He claimed self defense. As far as I know neither has Dunn. I don't know of any SYG hearing on the Dunn case.

    1. SYG was not a defense in the GZ trial.

    2. GZ was not found innocent.

There was initially some press saying he would (this the JX guy, right?) but it isn't like he couldn't have changed his mind, if it was even true.

This SYG thing is gonna piss me off like Frankenstein/Frankenstein's monster.

Yes, it's the JX guy. The crime occured in Jacksonville, but the guy is from Satellite Beach. Lived up the road from me. We have some common friends. He was on his way back to his hotel room from his kid's wedding when this thing happened.

It isn't very difficult to understand why syg would have a higher incidence of white murdering blacks. Use your common sense.

I agree, this guy is just trying to take advantage of the law.

Not sure if this is true. From what I've read, the law has been used quite often to get gang members and drug dealers out of murder charges with other drug dealers/gang members after shootings.

Stand your ground is the best thing to happen to Florida. Before when someone broke into your home, if you shot them and wounded them, you got sued for protecting your family. Not any damn more!

If the crook breaks his leg climbing into your window, he can no longer sue for not having an OSHA approved window to protect those who are into the sneaking in while you sleep business.

If several people decide they are going to beat up one, the one has the right to shoot them all. Taking a serious ass whipping from attackers, is no longer the only choice. After all, being beaten to death shouldn't be your only legal choice.

Women who face bigger men or multiple men, now have a chance to defend themselves when before they were the story in the newspaper with an unhappy ending for the innocent.

SYG won't go away in Florida, we have had too many innocent people in this state harmed and killed by crime, to return to victim status as policy.

The only difference with SYG is that the things we would have been forced to do to protect your family then, won't put you in jail or cost you more than the thief would have taken, now.

Before SYG, you had no "duty to retreat" in your home. You could shoot to kill then too. Besides, SYG hasnt done anything to prevent a possible civil suit to Zimmerman, other than make it somewhat more difficult.

Eh... have a real hard time seeing how he could lose an SYG motion to dispose of a civil suit now that I am aware of the civil/tort component of the law.

With respect to the mom who got 20 years, the following should be considered:

    A) warning shots are explicitly illegal in Florida
    B) If this was in her home, it's a castle doctrine issue, not SYG which applies to the public domain. I thought I remembered reading that she did not live with her husband anymore and thus trespassing laws may have come into play (though I could be wrong) and there were restraining orders in existence. Any way you look at it, that case was far from a clear cut SYG. Just because someone claims it doesn't make it applicable.
    C) The gun was fired in the direction of their children, who were NOT attacking her.

i guess to some, we can't debate SYG laws since it wasn't actually used in the Zimmerman case

That the OP includes two cases that have nothing to do with SYG may imply that the law itself isn't very well understood.

No, you can, you just can't use this case as a relevant example.
