Kicking is a specialty. It is not an "x's and o's" kind of thing. It is not like blocking and tackling or other football skills. It can only be taught by a kicking professional, someone who focuses solely on punting/placekicking.
I do not believe we have anyone on our staff with these credentials.
We either need to hire a kicking coach, or, if we are limited to the numbers of coaches on the team, hire a "kicking consultant" by some other name.
If we continue to play close-scoring games (read: USCe) the margin of error is zero and kicking becomes exponentially important.

Obviously Townsend has been punting well. Even if there isn't much of a difference between his stats and Kyle's, how would a coach in good faith go to him now and say "you've done fine but we're going to bench you now and give him another shot?"

All I know is when we punt now... 38 yards seems as far as it can/does go.

Last year, I was confident if we needed a 70 yard punt.. Kyle could do it.

Our current punter doesn't have that kind of leg.

Also, who is our special teams/kicker coach? Oh yeah... no one.

As most of you know, I don't harp on the coaches much, but this one is mind boggling.

please tell me you are not advocating on having a special "kicking" coach on the staff?

Ball's head got under the player and was slid on when the tackle was made.

Ball said, and I agreed, that it had gotten turned funny and he needed to take it off. Don't know how many of you have been in helmets before, but they aren't comfortable to start with and having one twisted 1/2 way around would be a problem.

Yes, in hindsite, he should have left it on... but when your looking out your ear hole things are a little less clear.

Lets see... our punters can't punt... our kickers can't make field goals...

    Yeah, no problems there...

I don't know if most teams have someone who trains these guys. I just know it seems like no one is training ours.

No surprise here. The coaches have problems evaluating the talent on their own team. As you said, calling a Johhny's 2 yard improvement exceptional while Kyle's performance unacceptable is startling. Also there is no active competition for positions which is really bad. For all we know Kyle is back to his all american self, but he won't get another shot again this season.

    +1

Meanwhile despite WM being all strict on the All American punter for one mistake, the better kicker is still not starting.

Punting averages can also be very misleading depending on where your punting from.

As popa pointed out, he had two touchbacks. Clearly means those punts were short field punts, and when you deduct 20 yards due to the touchback, that hurts your average even more.

Like I said, Kyle's leg is far stronger and it shows.

I understand taking his starting position away for a game, but you got to know Kyle is the guy we need to be making those punts from our 20.

I also think we were way too quick with the hook on Harden. The kids a freshman... it is going to take a few kicks to get his confidence. The last thing you want him thinking is "god if I f this up, I'm going to lose my scholy!!!" Confidence is KING with kickers. Jerking chains is no way to treat them.

Yeah but your listing people who have been positively contributing and then make a mistake. Christy (and I like him so no disrespect) started off struggling and then made some critical mistakes, no positives to counter the negatives. Some will point to his performance last year but before you do, think if you are the same ones who dismiss champs success last year as last year's only and has no bearing on this year. We're either a "what have you done for me lately" or we are not.

You can bet your bottom dollar Bama has somebody doing it under the guise of some consultant position.

QB, RB, OL, TE, K, P have all had very questionable personnel issues, none really related to injury either. Just about everywhere BUT defense - surprise!

1 punter seems to be doing fine right now. Most teams do not have some kicking specialist it would be a waste of a coach

Didnt you just say there was a questionable call on defense even though you were wrong?

I think it is more than fair to have different criteria for evaluating an individual player versus the leader of an entire organization. Kyle was one of the best punters in the nation last year, without question.
