I'm thankful for an observant passenger who noticed a fuel leak. C. Scott Shepherd and Traci Herman Shepherd and Grace spent 3 hours on the runway in Beijing but are now on their way to Detroit. They will miss their connection to Nashville tonight. Please pray for a flight tomorrow with at least 2 seats together.

It sounds familiar, but I didn't get a chance to visit any lounges. We had a new baby in a strange hotel room, and we weren't sure what to do with her to get her to sleep. You're probably right: we should have taken her to the executive lounge. :)

I'm sorry to hear that. It must be brutal to be soooo close to having a new baby home with you, but you can't get the plane off the ground. Best wishes for a smooth flight tomorrow.

We are in Detroit for the evening. Our flight from Beijing was delayed 3 hours due to a fuel leak, so we missed our Nashville connection (we were on the plane for 16 hours!). We have an early flight in the morning, so we will be home tomorrow between noon and 2:00. Yea!

Since arriving in Tennessee she has had a hard time adjusting. Scott's church told him when he left for China to take an extra week off when they got back and they are needing it. Grace has cried, screamed and refused to eat for a while. Sunday, I understand was some better, but they have a ways to go.

She is bonding a little with her new sister, Iris, but the road is slower than they had hoped. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers.

She could be overtired from jet lag.....that'll aggravate any anticipated adjustment issues for her.

Love and prayers for Grace and family.

Agree with all the above. Not even CLOSE to the same situation, but when my sister and I moved to the US from PR she was close to 3. The first few months were horrible. She was scared all the time, cried all the time...couldn't sleep. It was a mess.

Not that I recommend TV, but my mom would sit with her and watch kids shows (Sesame Street, etc) in English and in Spanish. Slowly she started removing the Spanish ones. Slowly my sister started falling into a routine and then everything was fine.

The change of location and language are very tough. Just hang in there, and have them build a routine. Extra TLC will get them far.

They are in my thoughts and prayers. I'm sure it will work out. Keep us posted.

Yeah stick to a routine soon her clock and body will feel like new, prayers up for lil Grace. Even I would need a lot of chill time at home from that long of a plane trip ;). Al least watermelon is an easy reach here in USA...but you got to taste the grits Grace.

My advice would be to find someone in town (preferably female) who looks Asian and speaks Chinese, and have her talk to Grace. Grace probably feels like she is giving up part of her identity by living in a strange land where people look very different than what she is used to, and everyone speaks the new language that she doesn't understand. Communicating in a foreign language that you don't understand very well is extremely tiring as well as frustrating. She may have assumed that the adoption process in China was temporary, like being taken on tour by strangers.

My daughter didn't get very verbal when we first adopted her, but I could tell she didn't trust white people (I would give her toys, and she would watch me to make sure I didn't steal them). When my wife's female Asian friends would visit, she would gravitate towards them and give them a hug after a few minutes of staring at them or playing quietly with them.

A fun game for Chinese children: one child yells "Cho-Ming-Ahh!" ("run for your lives") and all the children run like crazy. It's probably best if done outside and if another child yells it so she knows it's a game and she doesn't get scared.

Heartwarming story Growl. She will improve by leaps and bounds like her first week with your son and his wife in China. I like Chem's suggestion. Chinese to English children's video also if available.
Grace seems to love gymnastics. Any programs in Paris?

The thing of it is there so much for her to adjust to. Different kinds of people that she is not familiar with. Hearing a different language everywhere that she does not know and is not use to hearing. Foods and customs that are new and that she doesn't know. And it sounds like her bonding with her sister is helpful but probably with so many others she is not comfortable with and no doubt there are moments of fear. She does not understand what and why so many new things are happening in her life. At times we hear the phrase "one day at a time" and that certainly is what will be happening now. And of course David all of this not an easy time for your son and family and everyone connected. We will pray that The Lord will help them and give them the wisdom of Salomon. Time goes by fast and I'm sure a year from now all the Shepherds will look back and be amazed how far the precious little one has learned a new life with a new family. Our God is able to do more than we can imagine.

Fraggle Rock is MY favorite, closely followed by Sesame Street. Lolz
