I second this. Bill Simmons is one of my favorite writers period. He's put together a great staff over at Grantland (named, it must be said, after SEC boy and Phi Delt Grantland Rice ).
I loved Simmons when he actually wrote.... Now it's all podcasts and a sporadic piece on the NBA every few weeks. I do love Grantland.
Anyone that gets their panties in a twist over early season ranking is just a football fan taking that insanity over to basketball. It really doesn't matter. How did the Gators start out in 2005-06?
Maybe, but he is being shamelessly hypocritical. He himself did not have Florida in his top 12 in last week's Top 12 Power Rankings. So now it is crazy that Florida was ever ranked 19th?
No way, rserina trying to bash us over the head with sound logic again! You're either with us...or you're against us! Ha.
We actually started 17-0 that season.
Preseason #42, which was Lurker's point I believe. We were up to #14 after a 4-0 start and #2 once we hit 17-0.
Ranking doesn't really matter, but big wins do. We beat Memphis OOC and don't fall to a bad team, we look very strong going into conference play. With the SEC being rather pedistrian, we need to look good OOC to get a better seeding. Seeding is important. Hopefully we get another 15 seed in a later round again .
We moved up a whole 3 spots. Yeah, the pollsters love and respect us. Thank goodness the committee usually respects us in seeding.
Or someone who knows there are discrepancies and bias in polls. We better be thankful polls don't mean squat in basketball. I, though, don't get why people get their panties in a wad over posters making discussions.
I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, Simmons and his guys (especially Lowe) do a great job of high-level fan pieces full of advanced stats, Xs and Os, and clips. On the other hand, their corporate schtick ends up detracting from their arguments and sometimes aims more at a reaction than supporting a claim. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it often overshadows the entire point of the article. It is sort of like dropping an f-mob: occasional and well-placed instances can be surprising, disarming, and downright funny, but two or three in every sentence comes off as juvenile. Many of their writers have gone toward the latte rather than the former (Lowe and Klosterman, who mostly does pop culture stuff, are the exceptions).
Bill's been out in L.A. too long. He's still very talented but has spread himself a bit too thin I feel. I think some of his success has gone to his head and he's a bit too obsessed with celebrity and pop culture (although he always has been to an extent). He's also become more of a company man at ESPN. That's me being polite. Corporate shill is more like it (although he's on the gravy train so I can't say I blame him).
I've had a theory on sports writers/ radio personalities, for the 90% of them, once they write a book I lose interest in reading/listening to their normal stuff.
I don't want to hear about your book sales, and where you'll be doing signings....Drives me nuts!
to name a few.....
Titus heaping more praise in his column today.
More love from Titus. I enjoy this. I believe he was a walkon on the Greg Oden tOSU team, so he's seen the might of the Gators up close and personal
