something everyone is missing is the correlation between blacks and low income

i bet the numbers would start to even out more between races as you compare income levels

higher rates of crime, violence, pregnancy, abortions, illiteracy, health, etc, are all reflections of poverty

and instead of looking at the cause, in America we look at the affect and try to put a band aid over it, or a war against it. Lot of money to be made from those looking to capitalize on the affects of poverty.

    Yes, especially amongst politicians.

There are some deep-seeded issues in some of these communities to where poverty is prevalent, and I would wager that ignorance is one of the biggest issues, as well as the lack of any real family-structure in them. You want to look at why so many people in poverty stay in poverty? Look at the numbers of how many of them live-in and perpetuate a broken-family strucutre.

im sure that is a big part of it, but upward mobility is rather low for both low and middle income groups...the US is quite pitiful in this area compared to other industrialized nations...

the poor are getting poorer, the middle is dwindling, and well you know how the top is doing...

yes, as it has more to do with socio-economics then the color of one's skin

all low income people have higher rates of the areas being mentions, not just blacks

that isn't an excuse, but reality

getting people out of poverty will help every one of the ills you guys point to

the question is how...and i agree that it starts with family

No doubt - but the poor has stayed ignorant, the middle is being burnt out through a lot of debatable things, and top is the way the top has been throughout human history. Or in the words, we're following the path of every human civlization we know about(The rich stays rich and the vast majority of poor people struggle).

If only we could teach things like the importance of a family unit, morality, respect, kindness, hard-work, and personal responsibility in school -- perhaps the prevalence of ignorance wouldn't be so constantly progressive.

Not a litany of facts but human nature and observation. I think that more of the traditional Black culture in the US is tied to two primary things. The first is that they "banded together" in the plight of slavery. I do not see much push as a community/culture to clean up the bad apples. Old habits are hard to break.

The other is that a LOT of people get caught up in the martyr role. This includes many of the underprivileged Muslims in the Middle East. Even though opportunities are presented to break the economic stagnation they can't seem to get away from their identity as being noble victims. This is especially true with the males who bond in a primal/tribal way. If you try to break out there is usually a group there to "teach you a lesson."

But in the end it is up to the individual to get themselves out of their dilemmas. Charity, whether it is from the Government or from community/church groups, signals something in your mind that you are somehow disabled and incapable of doing more. The Habitat for Humanity is trying to break the habits but it is a pretty lame attempt when compared to the entrenched mindsets...on both sides. JMHO

    I agree

The next question though is, realistically, how many good jobs are even out there for everyone to fight over?

Not to turn this into an abortion debate, but if abortion were illegal and unavailable, there would be less unwanted pregnancies because men and women alike would take better precaution. Now, if an unwanted pregnancy pops up, you can just go to the doctor and let them take care of it.

Well said. Those who would downplay or ignore the correlation between personal & societal morality & the well being & health of a society are only fooling themselves.

Educate us 996. I read 3 newspapers daily, watch Fox and CNN, and am online throughout the day catching internet headlines. Yet the only time I ever see or hear anything about the NAACP is when a Pub politician speaks or declines to speak at their national convention (why even bother) or if a "rent a riot" event occurs where The Reverends Jackson, Farrakan and Sharpton fly in and the NAACP wants a piece of the cash so their talking heads speak out.

Keep in mind, I am also critical of AARP as they have morphed from a "senior" organization truly committed to the elderly into an organization that hawks co branded products to their 50 M and declining membership to keep the big ship AARP afloat.

Because some of the most powerful members of the NAACP are also some of the loudest and most hypocritical bunch of racists to ever grace this planet.

The government promotes single mother homes with multiple children from different fathers. It is all part of the plantation that the government wants to keep African Amercians on. As long as they are kept on the government plantation guys like Sharpton and Jackson will have a precieved purpose in society but once the plantation goes so to the likes of those two clowns.

Right and wrong has the same parameters, whether rich or poor.
This country has used the idea that people who are poor are more prone to vioence and crime than those who aren't. That is an insult. I grew up poorer than many today, that live off government handouts and we did not have the benefit of any government subsidy. I, nor any of my childhood friends turned to crime, despite all of us in the same boat. I did have one asvantage, that many don't have today, a Mother and Father.
As long as our culture is what it is, no discipline, a lackof two parent families, and an attitude of if you have it, I want it , nothing will change. We will continue wonder why things are what they are.
