Dutch skate coach: U.S. could have better speedskaters if not for our "foolish sports" like football

    From ESPN.com:

Dutch speedskating coach Jillert Anema knows how the United States can improve on its Olympic 0-fer on the Sochi ovals -- stop playing sports like football.

"You have a lot of attention for foolish sport, like American football," Anema told CNBC on Friday. "You waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, in a sport where it's meant to kill each other, to injure each other. (The U.S.) is so narrow-minded, and you waste a lot of good talent in a sport that sucks."
    ...
On the short track, only a silver medal in the 5,000-meter relay kept the U.S. from its first shutout since 1988. Anema believes the United States could do so much better with an improved infrastructure in the sport.

"When you compete once every four years, with talent, with a few lone wolves who are skating, you can't beat the world," Anema told CNBC. "It's no way."

You can't blame Anema for being a bit cocky as the Dutch have won 21 of the country's 22 medals on the speedskating ovals in Sochi.

"I think that the gold medal in speedskating is just as valuable as the gold medal in basketball, and we won 22.

"You'll never win 22 in basketball."

I don't even know where to start.

I sort of want to kick this dude in the face a little bit. While wearing speed skates.

Nobody on this side of the Atlantic cares about that turd, or what he thinks of American football.

Back in the good old days, they used to throw gladiators into the Coliseum in Rome to fight each other to the death or be mauled by lions. Football is just a watered down version of real sport and speed skating would be another giant step in the wrong direction. You ain't really living until you have your grey matter rattling around inside your brain case.

How many Lombardi Trophies do the Dutch have? There's a dike somewhere that needs his finger back in it.

If LeBron had only gone into synchronized swimming, American's would have so much more pride in themselves.

Goes to a major difference between cultures... you need to be fast on skates and skis to run away from a fight! We'd rather take a stand, and duke it out than run! ;)

Do hundreds of Dutch kids get million dollar speed skating contracts coming out of college?

It is hard enough to wait months until a new football season. Four years waiting on the great sport of don't give a damn, isn't in our dna.

Love the Dutch who stood with us after 911 more than their.sports.

Many Olympic sports are only watched by us only in the Olympics.

My experience is that the Dutch are arrogant about their ways and culture for no apparently good reason. I can live without tulips or wooden shoes. And the really cool furniture and crafts made by the Pennsylvannia Dutch are not Dutch at all, but German!

He is right that we would do better if we made a more concerted effort to grow the sport. However, he sounds like a lot of idiotic Americans that think only their sport of choice is the "right" one.

I heard this guy say this and he was dead serious, even angry at the stupid Americans that are so interested in worthless sports like baseball and football, especially in a "sport that sucks (football)".

My response is that "those Americans that liberated your nearly worthless country (again) in 1944 were not speed skaters. Those men for whom your women sprinted out of their houses and threw their arms around and had to be literally pried from in the middle of the street, were football and baseball players - not speed skaters. Nobody ever got liberated by a speed skater."

If you could look inside the guy's soul, what he's really angry about is that we take the 0.73% of the American males that are interested in Olympic winter sports, choose the best of them, and go to the Olympics and win the medal count. That's got to hurt his little feelings.
