Is the whole situation this year reminding anyone of Donald Douglas in 1989?

    Some similarities....

He was forced into a starting role after Kyle Morris went down with an injury.

Through his legs and his moxy he made a few exciting things happen on the field.

However, he was forced to deal with poor blocking, a lack of playmakers and an unimaginative offense which eventually doomed the team to failure.

Is Tyler Murphy playing a similar role here???

Looking at the schedule (and bear in mind this completely predates me) it looks really, really back-loaded. Would it be fair to say that Douglas led the team against the weakest parts of our schedule in 89?

It reminds me more of Kyle Morris when we all celebrated if we could score more than 6 points in a game.

Hopefully the next year will be the start of something beautiful like it was in 1989. But remember.... we got a new coach which is what we need here too.

I think Murphy is more of a quarterback than Douglas. What we needed was to not have Hall canned. I believe had this not happened and Morris was still the starter, Florida might have won at least nine games.

But if that would have happened, the 1990s would have looked differently.

The bolded part--I agree totally. Donald Douglas was a joke of epic proportions IMO. Had nothing but fear of what was about to happen EVERY time he took a snap. And God forbid if he dropped back to actually pass the ball. That part was excruciating.

I disagree with you about Kyle Morris--never had much faith in him, although I felt he was much better than Douglas. Not saying much really though. No way to know, but I can't see him winning 9 games for us back then. Just didn't see it with him.

The best thing about 89 was that we had Emmitt.

Murphy is much better than Douglas and it's not even close.

If this is like 1989 then their is an sec championship O waiting to be coached hiding here.

I don't see a lot of Douglas in Murphy, Douglas wasn't asked to throw much, thy brought in Lex Smith to do that, with predictable results.

Sorry, but Douglas holds the honor of worst ever by a landslide.

When SOS was hired, Douglas transferred (I think to Houston?) because he insisted he wanted to only play football as a QB. He became a DB at his new school. In his defense, he was a true freshman and never had much of a chance to develop.

Ah, yes the days when Lynn Amedee was the OC, an offense without a pulse. Only bright spot was Emmitt.

There's something to be said for that comparison.

Except for Emmitt Smith, this year's offense reminds me of the 1989 Donald Douglas offense.

This year's offense reminds me of 1988's offense. In 1988, we had the greatest running back in Florida high school history, Emmitt Smith. Lynn Amadee decided to use Emmitt Smith as a decoy. In 2013, we have a great running back, Kelvin Taylor, who broke Emmitt's state career rushing records. We're not playing him ... apparently because we don't think he pass blocks well enough. Emmitt didn't pass block either ... even with the Cowboys. Does anyone think the Cowboys should have left Emmitt on the bench?

Even Gary Darnell knew enough about offense to play Emmitt despite his pass blocking deficiencies. He didn't understand and couldn't coach offense, but at least he got his best rushing weapon in the game.
