Since we are 5 just days away from practice drills, will GC start previewing the upcoming season?

Teams have been able to practice as a team for a couple of weeks (or so) by now. Some teams have been doing this, I think I read that Florida has been doing individual or small group workouts instead of team practices.

Friday is when teams can start practicing 20 hours per week.

    Thanks 08.

But is there NO announcement yet from the Athletic Dept about when we 'officially' start?

This is the really difficult thing about being on a Basketball scholarship. Unlike most other sports, other than soccer, basketball players lose a lot of time during the two main semesters of an Academic Year, fall and spring to practice and games. The life of an intercollegiate athlete is no easy task in any sport, but for soccer and basketball it is really amazing that any of them manage to graduate.

No wonder so many of Kentucky's players leave after one year. It is really amazing that guys like Patric Young have stayed around.

Props to those 4th year seniors.

Actually this is as usual a pretty complicated subject. The NCAA is that way.

I found an article suggesting that in 2012-13, teams could practice as teams a limited amount in the summer:

    http://articles.baltimoresun.com/20...rgeon-terps-basketball-transfer-evan-smotrycz

I am not sure if this is true for 2013-14.

Additionally, the NCAA site explains there can now be 30 practices in the 42 days prior to the first game:

http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect...l/Calendar moves forward for Midnight Madness

So regular practice can start for teams beginning later this week. In prior years there were something like 25 practices in the 30 days prior to the opener.

Finally, prior to now, teams have been able to have a limited number of full practices in addition to small group workouts. Something like one 2 hours practice a week. According to CBS, Sunday the 15th was the first day for that:

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegebas...ari-after-first-practice-we-have-so-far-to-go

So I suspect that UF with less hype has taken advantage of the limited number of team opportunities like everyone else.

Could be. I was just basing it on this tweet:

    Well:

    1. If you learn anything around here, it should be that Brockway often does not get details right. Heck I don't even follow him.

    2. Thus by practice, I suspect that Broadway means the 30 allowed in 42 days, NOT the 2 hours periods that became ok on 15 September until 42 days prior to the first game.

    3. Did UK practice in the summer of 2012? Did you hear anything about team practice this past summer?

CBSsports weigh in on how coaches like and are using the new schedule differently:

Considering we have to face Wisconsin with half our players out, why not give Kasey Hill the kitchen sink early?

Why would you think UF will face Wisconsin with half our players gone? I doubt UF would do that to Wisconsin.

In all likelihood we won't enforce all of the suspensions concurrently, so only 1-2 players will be suspended for that game (Scottie being one).

There's actually flexibility of choice with those player suspensions?
    Where was that printed?

That seems really odd - in a 'we want to hold players accountable but want the flexibility to do it in such a way that the impact on winning is minimized kind' kind of way. But, I think its the schools own policy usually when it comes to drug matters (be it the case here). In that case, I'd have to imagine the school could write the rule however they want to.

There's a player saftey issue to consider as well. When you've got an 11 or 12 man roster, and 4-5 players are unavailable, the remaining players are forced to play significantly extended minutes. Considering it's the beginning of the season, that exposes those players to increased risk of injury and exhaustion.

Also, with respect to your statement that doing it this way is designed to impact winning, consider that this way extends the number of weeks that the team has to play without its complete roster, so it could actually have a negative impact on winning.

Not everything is as it appears at first glance.

What I think will happen is the majority of the players will miss:

    1. The scrimmage against another school where no press reporting is allowed. It is a scrimmage game, but it is also an intercollegiate athletic event with officials.

    2. The exhibition against Florida Southern. I know exhibition suspensions have counted in the past.

    3. The regular season opener against North Florida.

That would mean everyone except maybe C. Walker who is not really part of UF's team yet and maybe Wilbekin will be available. That will allow UF to follow through and redshirt D. Walker.

Scottie and the other suspended guys do get to practice with the team, don't they?

I suspect that is up to the coach. It has been reported that Henderson is practicing with Mississippi though will miss some games. I am hoping to hear whether or not all UF players are practicing sometime.
