Two weeks, this time.
I get that this is an opinion forum, so all opinions should be welcome, but it strikes me as curious when people take the time to basically answer "not applicable" to a yes or no question.
The OP asked, "Does a win by your NFL team ever salvage your weekend after a Gator loss?" Seems to me that if you are not an NFL fan and/or do not have an NFL team, the question doesn't really apply to you. And several people answered to say exactly that. Why? What's the point of such an answer?
I guess some people need to contribute to every discussion, even if it's to state that they don't have anything to contribute. And that's okay. Just funny, that's all.
ANYway, to answer tilly's question, as a Dolphin fan I was happy to see the win on Sunday. I was also happy to see us get the win behind our new kicker Caleb Sturgis, because he is a Gator AND he's my kicker on my main fantasy team. A double "homer pick" that so far has paid off - he was the second-highest-scoring kicker this weekend!
However, when I woke up on Monday morning the first football thought in my head was still disappointment from Saturday, not satisfaction from Sunday.
For me the difference is, even though I am practically a lifelong Dolphin fan, I am still just a fan, based on nothing more than them being my hometown team. Theoretically I could move to another NFL city and get behind that team.
Whereas, I am not a Gator "fan." I am a Gator. That is my alma mater so I do not have the option of choosing another college team to call my own. I could move somewhere else and paint different colors on my face but if you cut me, orange & blue blood will still come out.
About the only way I could envision a Dolphin victory salvaging my weekend after a Gator loss is if it's at the end of a rough UF season, and we are out of contention for the SEC East so the Gator loss is not a critical one, but then the next day the Dolphins get a crucial win against a division foe or something.
I wore all black to church on Sunday. My good friend who is an Iowa fan says he might just give up sports. My good friend the Browns fan says he gave up being disappointed years ago. A uga fan expressed sympathy for me but he was also grinning.
Some other team I like winning might take my mind of the Gator loss for a little while and ease the pain a bit, but not make up for it.
What is this NFL you speak of?
No! Because my teams the Bucs and they suck! As long as they have freeman all ill ever get to see is boring offenses on Saturdays and Sunday! FML!!!
I feel you, dog. I was a Gator and a Dolphin fan during the horrific convergence of the Zook/Wannstedt Eras.
Same people do it on every NFL thread. I don't really get it either.
I don't get as bummed as I used to about a UF loss since the Gators have won three NCs. But the Dolphins win helped, because Saturday's defeat to the hated Canes was a throwback to the days before SOS, when the losses were bitterer and left a mark on my psyche. It reminded me of the 1981 UF-UM game, when Danny Miller bounced a 55-yard FG through the uprights to beat the Gators.
The Canes were much worse than I thought they'd be, yet we STILL found a way to lose to them, just like in the 1970s and 1980s.
Two weeks!
I haven't slept well since Percy left and Maurice opened the season with 15 wild snaps and Carl Johnson said the OL would be fine as soon as the moon, stars and planets aligned.....
That was his brother, Mike... but I hear you.
Not in the last 20 years , I don't follow NFL any more
I'm a Saints fan, but I'd trade every one of their wins for just a redo of Saturday's game.
It's not even close.
I'd give up the Bucs Championship for one more TD in that game.
I hve been a rabid Redskins fan since 1953 and a win by the Redskins would have salvaged my weekend?
Not me man. That superbowl was a HUGE event after so many years of floundering, many of which earned them the "worst franchise in sports" tag, which lasted until Dungy came along.
As for the question at hand, it might have been nice, but I'm a Bucs (major choke) and Chargers fan (major choke). Rough weekend.
It's like apples & oranges. If I knew the Gators could have 6-7 losses & still win the championship, it wouldn't bother me as much. I'm a Browns fan, so their losses don't hurt me...but if they were in the playoffs, and lost...it would hurt just as bad as a reg season Gator loss. I can tell ya some late '80's playoff games that killed me!
I don't have an NFL team, but I can report that losing big at fantasy the next day makes me doubly miserable. Although with practice I have learned to take losing a lot better under Coach "Boom."
My favorite NFL team is whatever team has the most former gators on their roster.
