There has been a lot of discussion about the amount of time Presidents take for vacation. Without getting into a Obama vs Bush debate, which of the following do you consider Presidential vacation? Keep in mind that Presidents can always have staff, communication, and even meetings while away from DC.

A.). A trip to a resort area that is not his home?

B.). A trip back to his home (legal residence) prior to DC?

C.). Playing golf, skiing, or fishing on the weekend?

D.) Spending the weekend at Camp David?

E.) A trip overseas with a visit to another Head of State for two days and then two days at a private residence overseas?

F.). A round of golf or fishing on Wednesday afternoon?

G.). A trip back to visit relatives or friends in a location that is not his legal residence?

H.). A trip to a second home that the President owned previously as his "vacation home"?

For me, only A, G and H qualifies as vacation.

I find it pretty unlikely that any time is actual vacation time for a sitting president.

Given how detached DC has become from the country, I would say most of the time in the White House would be considered a vacation for the average American who is not politically connected.

I do not doubt the pressure of being Prez is huge so I do not begrudge him his time off-however, I would prefer he actually did the damned job before he took time off

I have to agree that there is no difference in performance between the time he is working and the time he is vacationing.

It depends whether he has an "R" or a "D" after his name. What happened to the good old days when presidents used Camp David for working vacations instead of flying themselves and their families all over the world at our expense?

Say what you want about Richard Nixon. The man understood the business of being President. When he travelled abroad, the goals were quite ambitious.

    Obama has young children.

He gets an extra pass for getting them out of town before school starts.

Objectively speaking, because I am nothing if not objective, I'd say that presidential vacation is:
    1. Good and well-deserved when your guy takes it, though it's not really vacation because he's really working the entire time.
    2. Bad and an insult to the entire nation when a guy from the other party takes it. I mean, who the hell does he think he is, relaxing on our dime?

For Obama, anytime the cost of operating the federal government is increased because he decides to travel ands therefor needs to transport all of the usual assets needed to do his job, assuming he's actually performing the job of POTUS.

With all of the technology available to a President they are never out of the loop. However, when a crisis strikes vacation needs to end. The family can stay behind but the President needs to get back ASAP

And this same technology reduces the need to the PotUS to take so many trips out of DC. These "speaking" engagements are just mindlessly stupid and wasteful. IMO, the PotUS doesn't need to leave DC .... and congress doesn't need to go to DC; handle everything via VPN.

C'mon man, fundraising for "Organizing for Action" is a very important thing for the president to do on the taxpayer dime

I'd be willing to guarantee that there are contributors to this board who participate in the OFA's conference calls and/or local meetings

It is all about optics. When Reagan vacationed he went to his ranch in California. It was dubbed the western white house. When Bush vacationed he went to his ranch in Texas. The elder Bush went to his home in Maine. Carter went to his farm in Georgia. Again, a home. I don't even remember Clinton ever going on a vacation although I am sure he did.

Obama is a tad more flamboyant in his vacations. He vacations like a rock star. But of course, he is.

As someone who is self employed, I am never really on vacation unless I can NOT be reached by phone.

The POTUS is never on vacation, unless he can't be reached, which he never is.

SO, for the POTUS, I would define vacation as any time he tells the VP "hey, don't call me unless x, y, or z happens".

I don't begrudge anyone taking time off to recharge, but if you aren't doing much but fundraising (which I personally hope he would do more of), you really don't need a vacation.
