Could next week be history for Florida's big 3 universities.

I find this amazing as there could still be some firsts regarding this subject in this era of life and football. Next week could be history for the Big 3 Florida schools if true. However, here is my question.

Will next week be the first time that that all 3 Florida teams (Florida, FSU, Miami) have starting black/African American quarterbacks for their teams in the same week.

Sadly, I can remember in the late 80's some said Donald Douglas (High School All-American out of Texas) would never start here because of a possible racist undercurrent. Thankfully that would be incorrect as he did start some in 89 but I believe he left when Spurrier came.

I just can't remember the quarterbacks for FSU and Miami during the Chris Leak years.

Who cares? As long as they offer their teams the best chance to play, I don't give two craps what the color of their skin is.

This would be news in the seventies, but not now. There is no longer such a thing as race. Besides, isn't Murphy an Irish name? I think it will be more interesting when Grier gets here since he looks like he's Amish.

I think if you read the tone and context of the post you can see I don't see it as a negative. I felt it was positive. Those things are interesting considering the times. I would have though it had already happened by now. However, I knew someone would get their panties in a wad and make it a negative post.

I thought Octavius Gourd was the black QB when Spurrier came. Wasn't he battling with Morris?

No he was the running back that was here when Emmitt came in 87 who would then go on to transfer after Emmitt's break freshman game of 224 yards against Alabama.

I go back a ways and the 1970s saw several black qbs operating the wishbone offense, guys like Gaffney, LeCount...in early 1980s we had white qbs like Peace, Hewko and then a guy named Bell.

Don't care who qb is as long as he can motivate the team and play well.

Octavious Gould was a running back. He transferred because some guy named Emmit had a halfway decent game against Alabama.

I thought Derrick Crudup didn't get a fair shot against Kerwin Bell back in the early 80s. Don't think it was color related but ironically, Crudup's son didn't get playing time at Miami and the family did say it was because he was black then. Good thing we're in a new time and era.

i could care less what the color of your skin is. if you can ball, get out there and help your team. murphy is our guy for the rest of the season and i hope he does great. i could care less about the color of fsu and miami's qb, and by that i mean, i could care less about their qbs in general.

Eh. Why is it a positive? At the college level and NFL level, I really find it hard to believe that race plays a role in who starts and who doesn't. Maybe that was the case before but I can't see how it's been a factor in this era. That hurdle is gone and has been for a while.

It's just highlighting a non-issue. I see Tyler Murphy playing QB and I don't see black. I think that goes for most. I don't know, maybe I am naive.

Now if you want to talk about coaching... <opening can of worms> heh.

Douglas' main problem was the field jumping up and knocking his passes down.

Whatever. I'm just sick and tired of race being thrown into *everything*...especially when its a non-issue. I don't care who is playing QB for any team other than UF and the team we play next.

No, actually when I say positive meaning I don't have to hear it when someone says a team in college isn't playing a black quarterback because of race. I didn't like to hear it then when Douglas came and it proved to not be true then as it would now. Just know you still have to hit some firsts. Same goes with the coaching issues we heard from the longest about the SEC lack of black coaches. I was glad to finally see the hurdle jumped. Celebrate it, call it nice, and go on from there. That is all. In truth, using the words "make history" for next week was probably too strong.

Now regarding Douglas, yes his main ability was running not throwing which is why he did not stay when Spurrier came.

And just when you thought we lived in a post-racial society, someone has to go and point out that it matters to them what race someone is. Good job.

Only thing we should have cared about today was that he was Blue.
