I can't get the video to play but it looks like they used the 32-12 problem.

It took me over half a day to figure out what they were doing...and I got an 800 on the Math portion of the GRE. So while barely literate according to the verbal section I am pretty good at math...

Can anyone identify the common core standards that mandate students be taught how to do math this way?

The best way to make kids call themselves too dumb and give up is to overcomplicate everything. Could it be that that's the real goal?

Even if I got it and knew I could work all the problems, I'd probably refuse to do the homework out of sheer boredom. It's also a good way to get more ADHD diagnoses and Ritalin cases.

Einstein made relativity easier to understand than this idiotic method makes 32-12.

Well, it should not take you more than a few minutes to figure out what they are doing. This insane method has its obvious problems. The less subtle problem but perhaps more dangerous problem is that advocates still do not realize that they are not teaching kids how to think about math to build on as they say. Instead, they are teaching only one way to think. So, if you think that particular way, you get it. If you don't, then you are outside the lines. In other words, you are being trained to think along a certain linear line. No outside the box thinking is allowed. This sets society up for far more sinister things.

There is now only one unconventional way to solve the math problem. If you do it differently, it is wrong even if you get the right answer. And, there are several ways to solve the same math problem using different ways of thinking about a problem. It is not just either the traditional way or the thinking way. You have to select the exact right thinking way or it is wrong.

And then there is the whole redefinition of words. It is like a big joke someone made up to show absurdity that someone took seriously and made it policy. Math now has its redefined politically correct language to go along with the narrow thinking model.

Perhaps even more absurd is the alignment for or against along political lines.

    Are you Matholitically Correct?

Do not marginalize "word problems." They will have a complex and might need counseling. They are now to be referred to as "math situations".

Do not isolate 1's by "carrying the 1". Instead, make them feel supported by "regroup 10 1's as a Ten".

Do not "borrow". It might make the numbers feel used like a prostitute. Instead, "take a Ten and regroup it as ten 1's".

Do not "Add". The numbers might feel incomplete. Instead, you "increase".

Do not "Subtract". The numbers could feel like you are calling them fat. Instead, you "decrease".

In an equality society where everyone gets a trophy, you do not say "greater than" or "less than" so that no one is marginalized. Instead, you "compare" and appreciate their uniqueness.

You do not "show your work" or answer "how do you know." Numbers might feel exposed. Instead, you "evidence" your answer so we can make sure you arrived at the answer by the sanctioned thought process.

The term replacements are real in cc.

I asked a teacher about this. She said she was told that it is supposed to teach students to "reason". Huh? She agreed it is absurd.

She said the CC people wanted to get away from memorization. Why? What is wrong with memorizing say multiplication tables?

In addition, she said they do it with "dots", which is even more absurd. Imagine drawing out 294 less 147 in dots !!

Anytime something is taken, as in adding, subtracting, etc, from simple to complex, then that is a sign of foolishness.

Brilliance is taking complex to simple, not visa versa.

This is what happens when Govt....BIG FAT BLOATED GOVERNMENT gets involved in local issues. And education is "local".

All the more reason to flee from public schools to private or home schooling !!

All the more reason to dismantle the Federal Dept of Education and replace it with George Castanza is the small office.

Moonbat #1: "I have an idea"

    Moonbat #2: "What idea?"

Moonbat #1: "Why don't we completely change the way we teach reading"

    Moonbat #2: "Why and how?"

Moonbat #1: "Because it serves to enhance our position, gives us opportunities in the future to revise our original changes, which will result in our greater control of the youths of society, and further serve to keep our kind in power, all of which is for the greater good. And we are the greatest of the good. How? Simple, we make it complex and use not only horizontal and lineal word configurations, but also vertical , diagonal, and random, all simultaneously while incorporating varied Third World dialects "

Moonbat #2: "Are you telling the truth?"

    Moonbat #1: "Yes."

Moonbat #2: "Shut up but do it."

*No more irrational numbers. This is a mean-spirited term. Engineers can now round pi off to 3. It's close enough.
*The term natural number will be eliminated as it implies that some numbers are unnatural.
*Any solution is a good solution because all numbers are equal.
*Imaginary numbers are to be dismissed as the hobgoblin of conspiracy theorists.

One more....teacher told not to give back papers graded with "red". It makes kids feel bad. Use purple or blue.

Then people wonder why the youth has identity issues, young men cant figure out how to be guys.

I probably would have figured out what they were doing faster if they had shortened to...

    12+8
    20+10
    30+2

But then again I had never seen this technique before...

It is stupid, but I saw immediately what they are doing. Think of it as counting out your change. Sort of.

This is what happens when you pay too much for school administration. Education gets worse, not better.

Is no one else bothered by the complete lack of factual basis for this thread?

I think this has more to do with politician than school administrators. There's big bucks in new books and curriculum.
