According to the depth chart released today: https://twitter.com/ZachAbolverdi/status/504306715333230592

What does everyone make of this? I was hoping to see McGee integrated as a key component of the O this season. Maybe he just hasn't had time to develop chemistry, or Burton made some big strides over the summer?

Or the coach plans on using both throughout the game and it really doesn't matter which one starts.

I imagine McGee will be playing plenty.

Clay is better than most here have given credit, but catching was not his strong suit. That said, we need good blocking more than good hands right now and perhaps Clay has improved on both fronts.

It doesn't mean much of anything IMO. They'll both play plenty, which ever one is named the starter is just a formality.

The only possible explanation for OBOB's statement is that he believes our O-line is going to stink it up. If that's the case, Clay Burton is hardly the cure.

Both will play some of you worry about the depth chart way too much. There will be plenty of playing time for everybody Saturday

Burton has like 3 catches his entire career. If we need help blocking just put in an extra OL. What's the point of a non-catching, undersized lineman which is basically what he would be?

Yes, unless you missed the last few years and practice reports.

No, I don't think it's going to "stink it up." However, I do see it as a continued weak point, and this has been validated by camp reports. In other words, given a choice between good receiver or good o-line, I'd take the latter in this case.

None of that implies that Clay might not also be vastly improved in both facets. In either case, the coaching staff has decided he's better.

Sorry OB, I disagree. I've watched PLENTY of Clay Burton to last me a lifetime (as a Gator fan). I'm ready to watch McGee, a proven pass catching TE.

IMO, Coach is giving Burton some respect for working hard in our program for the last few years whereas McGee just showed up. I have no doubt that when need a big first down that McGee will be playing.

I'm not sure what you disagree with. I'm not saying Clay is a proven pass-catching TE, I'm saying the focus here might well be on blocking and given our issues with the o-line in the last few years (and reportedly in spring and fall camps), that's understandable.

A pass-catching TE isn't much good if our QB has no time.

I think the best player should play period. Shouldn't be because he's a senior, certain coach recruited him or whatever.

Which means we have blocking issues and have decided we can't afford to have a tight end in the game who can catch?

I think it stinks. Jake McGee should be on the field way more than no-hands Burton.

I also think it stinks that Caleb Brantley isn't connected to Ivie with an OR. All the good comments by Muschamp and Durkin went right out of the window. Maybe Lawing is giving Brantley tough love, work harder or sit.

    I didn't decide anything, I'm interpreting.

I think we'd all agree that blocking has been a major Achilles's heel for this team the past 2-3 seasons. In the last season we've had receivers and catching RBs finally step up. We have options there and a wealth of talent.

Given that and the decision to start Clay, my hunch is that the immediate value of the TE position in the early part of 2014 is to provide ancillary blocking assistance. I never said we can't afford to have a catching TE in the game. Hell, Clay may well be improved in that regard. But this is my impression as to why he may have gotten the nod in the first game of 2014.

Which part of that seems unreasonable?

Bingo. I wouldn't be surprised if they were both out there on the first play.
